As for what they go through !!! Maybe Australia does get the truly needy ones.
(I will add I spent a long time working with ethnic minority communities, Somalian being a very large one and I have been informed by them all of the terrible time they had getting into the country they chose to end up in !)

Your posts are all still there for people to read, quotes you made and otherwise, what you havent answered is what exactly your point is about somalians, the comments youve made such as how "clever" they are mean what then?

I simply asked the OP what she meant by what they offer and the reply I received was 'good posture'. I guess when you've had different cultures living with you for a number of years and you get to know their ways and their motives, you tend to become a little cynical.

.
It isn't costly for refugees because by definition they are living in circumstances which are intolerable: The fear of the knock at the door in the middle of the night because their religion is different or their ethnic group is different or their skin colour is different or they have spokebn against the ruling class...
Ironically, conditions which some people brought up in the UK and trying to get into Australia, currently living in a leafy suburb and whose travels have never taken them out of Europe, might actually aspire to.

Kurds v Turks........South Afs v Somalians........Iraqians v many......etc
Think what you will, or what you're convinced of/told. I will always know a true refugee and have only ever known of 5 out of around 5,000. Again I cannot prove statistics, experience only, no links to accompany, sorry !

Well of course there will be some who shaft the system - just as there will be Brits who shaft the welfare state in the UK. (Oh my back's bad - I need disability payments).
But just because there are some who shaft the system, it doesn't mean that refugees shouldn't get in for free. Pseudo-refugee's should be weeded out.
The danger is (and I'm sure that you know this given your background) when you start labeling whole nationalities as con-merchants. There are some idiots who will believe this.
Goodness me it's like saying that all Australians are ex-convict racist thicko's who live in a cultural vacuum, don't know how to build decent houses, live in regulated markets and accept a weekly shafting by Coles and Woolies.

I do know what they given to australia and thats an organised crime gang the AK's ,who battle with aboriginals in mirrabooka and northbridge and are well entrenched in the car ringing business ,this isnt a racist remark as many immigrants bring with them unsavoury characters with them but i have yet to see the somalians offer much in the way of a positive imput to australian way of life ,different can be said of the vietnamese and chinese and italians who all have contributed greatly in different industries but still hve their crime syndicates .
And ofcourse we have the good old poms ,who have been coming here for years but now seem entrenched in the northern suburbs ,spending their weekends at the Old Bailey reliving coronation street and east enders and getting pissed and having a good old punch up after .

There are still a lot of generalisations here.
What about the organised crime of the Vietnamese in Northbridge?
I'm sure there are some (a lot of) low down Somalis but I'm also sure that they aren't all like that.

Just my opinion but does anyone really have the right to comment on any group of refugees/nationality. unless you are an Australian citizen and have the right to vote on things such as immigration, you are a guest of Australia and considered an ethnic minority yourself

There was an item on BBC news a couple of days ago saying how the Australian Government was actively encouraging more immigrants from India.
Will be interesting to see how the 'little Englanders' react to that.

The old saying 'there is good and bad in everyone' springs to mind, because I live not far from a large Somalian community.
The ladies tend to keep themselves to themselves whilst I'm afraid the male members of that community (although not all of them) have caused alot of trouble around our parts.
Violent and aggressive, they are known to the police for their crimes. An ex colleague of mine has been insulted for wearing skimpy tops and my dog was spat on by one group when I was on the bus.
At our local supermarket, they have caused alot of problems, going round the shops eating the food, refusing to pay for it and verbally attacking the assistants.
Even my husband saw on the bus he was on, a group of Somalians of about 18, refuse to pay the bus driver and threaten him. The bus driver without their knowledge, had pressed the panic button and made a stop at the police station where the police got on the bus and took them away.
Another time, we were coming back from the town and again, about 5 Somalians refused to pay (they dont like paying you see) and when the driver refused to drive the bus until they did, they swore at him and then shouted 'Suck your mother' to the driver, before punching the safety glass and getting off.
Crimes are committed by people from all walks of life, but it just so happens where I live and some surrounding areas, alot of the trouble happens to be from the Somalians.
I wont go to certain places where they are, or if I had to, I would watch what I wore, because I know from what has happened to others, that doing certain things will start trouble.
I realise they have come from a war torn and poor country and have been through alot, but speaking from experience, they do not always do themselves any favours.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, I am not, this is how it is where I live and I have said not all of the Somalian community behave in this manner, its just when some of them do, they give the rest a bad name.
A refusal to integrate into society, hostile behaviour against Western clothing and culture and generally being aggressive and nasty, is not the way to go.
As my North African husband said, when in England....
