Most of the good have been covered. I can't believe the OP missed King's Park which is really one of Perth's shining lights.

Some more bad.

Insects - especially the flies and cockroaches
No insulation in houses - expensive to keep cool in summer and hard to heat in winter
Getting caked in suncream everytime you go out
Dodgy schooling - it's worth saying twice
No real heart to the city so it lacks character - just one suburb after another
It's a cultural wasteland

hi grunty,i wonder how many people there are reading these threads about perth that dismiss in their minds all the bad things about perth...

its funny of all the negative points i read i always try to come up with a positive,i hate flies and cockroaches though..the schooling i would hope that if we struggle ,i would try to come up with a solution, private perhaps..as long as my kids are happy that will do me...

but until i have wore the t shirt, god only knows what my opinion of perth will be this time next year..

i just like hundred like me ,would just be content with being happy...

only time will tell...i must admit though ,it would have to be pretty sihte, for me to be as unhappy as i am here in the u.k at the moment...sad but true..

Good local school Yes ours was too, supposedly, but year to year teacher quality is very variable
lack of flies this year, because it has been so dry
Awsome beaches don't agree - preferred beaches in Portugal, Esperance, Cornwall, etc
Climate is amazing climate is annoying
Airport is just 30-40mins away , use it all the time and not had any dramas . agreed
Cheap fuel is this a good thing in these days of impending environmental catastrophe
Rates/council tax alot cheaper !! overall tax burden is higher and services are poorer
people will say hello agreed
You can earn good $$$$ haha
Most shops do close on a sunday and yes this is a good thing ! why is it good, if you don't want Sunday shopping then just don't go

Good local school Yes ours was too, supposedly, but year to year teacher quality is very variable. Very happy with my Son's school. It is private though as local primary schools are hit and miss.
lack of flies this year, because it has been so dry. Agreed.
Awsome beaches don't agree - preferred beaches in Portugal, Esperance, Cornwall, etc. I also don't think the beaches in Perth are anything special. Beaches in South Africa are much better.
Climate is amazing climate is annoying. Climate is great although winter can be cold. Today was beautiful, great for working outside, not too hot with a breeze to take the edge off.
Airport is just 30-40mins away , use it all the time and not had any dramas . agreed. Airport is 15-20 mins forom me so happy with that. Parking is fairly cheap too.
Cheap fuel is this a good thing in these days of impending environmental catastrophe. That's debateable. I guess fuel is expensive in relation ro Aussie earnings. I drive diesel cars so fuel costs for me are low.
Rates/council tax alot cheaper !! overall tax burden is higher and services are poorer. Agree totally that taxes are higher. We actually get very little for our local taxes.
people will say hello agreed. Mostly agree but I find a lot of shop assistants rude and ignorant.
You can earn good $$$$ haha. In my line of work salaries are awesome and still rising. This is one of the best places in the world for people with my skills right now.
Most shops do close on a sunday and yes this is a good thing ! why is it good, if you don't want Sunday shopping then just don't go. Agree. I cannot believe that we have little Sunday or late trading and that there is even a debate about this subject. Let shops open when they want. If you don't want to shop then don't.

Flies last year were ok too ,

So you don't like mile after mile of white sand , warm seas ,with plenty of space and free parkin right on the beach ?
Climate is amazing climate is annoying
LOL annoying , why? I do like heat and so do my old bones
Airport is just 30-40mins away , use it all the time and not had any dramas . agreed

Hell yes

well re rates i uesd to pay 3 times what i do now would say that the services i get are better than we had in Dorset .
people will say hello agreed

I used to work sundays and its a pain in the arse if you have too. There are still plenty of places like IGA Bunnings etc that are open , you just can't shop for a T-shirt !

Why dont you have insulation? Ours is fully insulated and works a treat, doesnt get extremely hot and on the coldish nights we had a few weeks ago it wasnt freezing either

You can always have it added if you buy an older property that hasnt got any, definitely a home improvement worth doing.

Must admit Perthforme I'm with you, I actually quite like that most of the shops are shut on a Sunday. We have a local supermarket and chemist that are open so if you're really stuck for something you can pop down there, but Bunbury city centre itself is shut other than a few coffee places/restaurants. We have late night shopping on a Thursday, all shops open til 9pm which is a great time to get your weekly shop done and out of the way before the weekend.

The South West
Lightening shows
loads of construction jobs

The Bad:

Housing costs..all ready taken into account in my case..
Rental costs
Freeway gridlock....i will be heading home before it starts to build up..
Traffic lights
Hoons..i will try and pick a hoon free road, place to live..
Public transport (you mean trains that run perfectly on time, and free buses in the city centre, or other public transport)
Second hand car prices (depends if you are buying or selling)
Lack of nightlife
Expensive beer (In the bars maybe, but the beer you buy in stores I find to be cheap)Dodgy schooling... (there are some great schools here, and some bad ones, just like the rest of the world)
Worst driver standards ... (anywhere)
Supermarket hours of opening
Longer working hours ...shorter in my case,no more working weekends..
Isolation
Northbridge by night
Holden Commodores (pre-2000)
The Airport..i intend to use it once and thats on the way in.. (its a small airport for a small population, I always find it very efficient)Flight prices "home"..not applicable...
The telly...(agreed although these days everyone, ourselves included download their own selection of TV progs, so you are making your own schedule, in a couple of years there will hardly be anyone watching actual TV)
Make your own mind up.

Many of these are true, and to be honest I havent found many negative points about living here, life is for living, not sat on yer arse whinging, as many do. The one that jumps out at me though is Isolation, this really is the latest reincarnation of the Emporers' New Clothes. Perth or Australia ISN'T isolated, the moon is isolated, Australia isnt, its a state of mind. Granted some people will miss their friends and families more than we are missing ours, but there are tens of thousands of people living here from a broad range of different countries and cultures, one of the many things they all have in common, is they are all keen to make friends and socialise. I know we arent alone in having a much better and busier social life here than we had in the UK, as many of our friends have had the same experience.

Totally agree on all points, must admit I just ignore the word "isolation" now as it is complete codswallop to me!

We certainly have a far better social life here than we ever had in the UK

I find working any day is a pain in the arse if you want to do something else. Surely the important factor about when you work is how it fits with your own circumstances. For me, I work Monday-Friday and I am off every weekend which ties in with when my kids are not at school. If I had to work weekends, I'd get a different job - simple! If I didn't have kids, I would prefer to work a Sunday so that I could have a day off during the week when things were open.

I don't want to shop on Sundays (or any other day for that matter!) but I definitely do not like going to the lovely malls here on Saturdays when they are mental busy because everyone who works Monday-Friday has only that one day to do their shopping.

Also, it's a nonsense that supermarkets are not open 24 hours. I mean this is meant to be a major city in a consumer-driven, capitalist society isn't it?

no sunday shopping will have to go into my good point list,i honestly hope that i never have to suffer one of those bloody shopping centres again in my life....horses for courses but b&q,ikea and garden centres are not my idea of a sunday day out,,,its like a new sport here in the u.k..

bank holiday days out at a megastore, not for me thanks....but if that rings your bells, then good on ya...

its a free world..

I see what your saying , but belive me if you had no kids sunday work would be worse , you can't get drunk if you so wish on a sat night , plus if your mates are doing stuff on a sunday you can't go due to work !
If you want to do your weekend shopping without the crowds get up early most aussies don't get out of their pit till 10 am !
24 hour shopping ? All the local tescos near my old home were doing away with 24 hours !
How many times have you needed a loaf at 2am ?

Where we live here in the UK, the supermarkets are open 24 hours. But realistically, you can only do a weekly shop in there between 9am and 6pm. Reason: the meat and fish counters are closed. Fresh veg has not been re-stocked. "Staple" foods like bread and milk have not been re-stocked either.

The time for grocery shopping that fits in best with my life would be 8pm on a weekday. I tried that a few times at our local Tesco (which is a 24 hour hypermarket). But I have now given up on that for the above reasons: they are basically empty of everyday and fresh goods at 8pm and don't re-stock until the early hours of the morning.

I also found that since 24 hour shopping became the norm here in the UK, it was the "thin end of the wedge": It was the start of the culture that everyone has to be available 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days of the year. My husband has what used to be a "typical" Mon-Fri office job. But he can no longer have his mobile switched off in the evenings, or at the weekend, or when on holiday. Bosses and colleagues expect him to be always available.

Personally, I prefer a life where as many people as possible have the weekend off. Yes, it might make grocery shopping marginally more unpleasant - but overall it leads to a better quality of life if most people can "switch off" from work Sat and Sun because most places are shut.

Just my two cents worth.

Gina

P.S. I am moving to Perth and very pleased that Sunday trading is not the norm there .
