How do you know they were white the police did not reveal their race. The suburbs where it happened was very multicultural with many ethnic gangs. The police said it was a robeery and not racially motivated. l don't think theres ever been a murder of an Indain where racism was proven as the motive. ALmost all the murders of Indians in Australia have been carried out by other Indians.

As with most countries I would say that racism and intolerance in general are more acute in rural areas. Living in the city (Sydney and Melbourne in particular) from my experience there is more integration. Although like I say I do hear quite a lot of shocking off the cuff comments that make me do a double take. There are a few pockets of closed minded communities (of all races) that stick to their own, get aggressive towards all outsiders and are best avoided. But the younger generation in general do seem a lot more inclusive and culturally accepting. I think you'd have to be very unlucky or stupid to experience any serious racial violence. I'd say the risks of that are no greater than in the UK and I certainly wouldn't let it put you off coming here. |

Still not acceptable behaviour in society and you certainly won't see the average Australian in the street telling people to '***** off we're full', it is more the bogan element of society involved in that. As others have mentioned, some Australians carry such a massive chip on their shoulder (insecurity) that they even discriminate towards people from other states and make hostile and derogatory comments towards them. These people would be part of that same bogan element that are involved in overt casual racism in Australian society. I admit, a lot of people in Australia think these things and may express them in private among friends and family out of frustration mainly or even fear of the local culture becoming watered down, as one of the recent posters described is common in the UK as well, but very rarely will someone (the average Australian person) actually discriminate or act in a hostile manner towards any individual or group of people of ethnic origin purely because of their ethnicity. That would make Australians a***holes to put it bluntly and no one would want to live here or be able to tolerate it for more than one second. Clearly this is not the case. ;) |
