This seems to question your version...

A 15-year-old boy has appeared at a children’s court charged with the murder of Indian accountancy graduate Nitin Garg, who was allegedly stabbed to death as he walked to work in Melbourne’s west earlier this year.

"Our inquiries, at this stage, we don’t believe it was racially motivated," he said, however he would not reveal what police believed the motive was.

But of course I read the news and the news regarding racism in Australia is quite frankly a little worrying for me. But on the other hand I feel the media may be blowing this way out of proportion? - Of course many student were assaulted and even killed.

The UK has its own problems for which I personally think is not that bad but because of the media coverage, Australia seems to have a serious issue.

I just wanted your thoughts with regarding this please.

My hubby's ancestry is indian although he was born in SA, he has not really encountered much racism at all so don't worry too much. The media sells by telling negative story's and always blow things out of proportion. For us personally life is good in Oz, don't let ruomours etc affect your decision. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Of course it is there, Australia is a land of enclaves and everyone keeps their heads down in their own little enclave. Certainly around here the whites have been touched with the PC wand and are the least racist bunch of all. My white kids have twice been subjected to racist attacks when they were younger - one from a gang of Lebanese and both of them from a gang of aboriginal young people who thought throwing stones at them was a great idea (at that age my two were totally colour blind!).

General rule of thumb here for any colour/ethnicity/gender is dont do stupid stuff and walk down dark streets in dodgy neighbourhoods (or the food court in Westfield Paramatta in the late afternoon if you are a teenager). And dont worry, according to the PC media violence is only racism if white people do it.

True in some parts.

However - about working in a place, I don't think that is racism - just self-selection on the part of the person putting themselves forward for a job. People don't say - 'I won't apply here' they say 'I will apply here'.

Here in the SE, restaurants would be operated by family and their network; I doubt they would even advertise locally. I bet if you badgered a big enough establishment for a job - because many takeaways are 1-man and a cook operations - and explained how interested in the cuisine you were they might give you a gig eventually- they might even be flattered(!) but it probably rarely eventuates!

In October, Brisbane's Lord Mayor Campbell Newman and Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale will sign what they describe as a "world-first" three-city sister city agreement with Hyderabad. Driving the merger are investment, jobs and healing recent racism-related wounds.

Cr Newman said the relationship would be two-way, opening up the local market to Indian businesses and allowing Brisbane and Ipswich businesses to grow in India.
Cr Pisasale said it would put southeast Queensland on the map.

As a general rule I would say the level of casual racism you hear people speaking over here is much higher than in the UK, although there is an argument that says people in the UK think similar things, but just don't express it out loud. Very possibly the case - impossible to determine for sure.

As with most countries I would say that racism and intolerance in general are more acute in rural areas. Living in the city (Sydney and Melbourne in particular) from my experience there is more integration. Although like I say I do hear quite a lot of shocking off the cuff comments that make me do a double take.

There are a few pockets of closed minded communities (of all races) that stick to their own, get aggressive towards all outsiders and are best avoided.

But the younger generation in general do seem a lot more inclusive and culturally accepting. I think you'd have to be very unlucky or stupid to experience any serious racial violence. I'd say the risks of that are no greater than in the UK and I certainly wouldn't let it put you off coming here.

Australians practically dont exist anymore, they are going extinct. You will probably be made monkey noises by a group of Asians and you will probably be threatened by a gang of Lebs.

Aussies are the least of your worries.

I agree with the above post. I am too a desi-looking Indian (haven't anglicised my looks yet) who arrived in Melbourne recently. I was too worried about Aussies targetting Indians after reading Indian media reports but after coming here I found them to be exaggerated.

Aussies are good people, they are mature, welcoming and cooperative. However, some areas in Melbourne have been taken over by dodgy creatures who look for an opportunity to target innocents. Make sure you know dodgy areas around you and never go there during the dark.

Unfortunately law here is lenient towards 'common violence' and 'under-18s'. There's no harsh penalty for bashings and brawls, and thugs make merry on these rules. No wonder most of them turn out be under-18

in Sydney Indians held this protest against racism, but they said it was the Lebanese that were attacking them and had no problems with racism fom white australians. White Aussies are probably the least racist people in OZ often its Aboriginal and Lebanese that attack other people including whites becasue of their race. As someone said try getting a job in a chinese restruant as a cook or waiter if you are white and you see lots of adds for accomodation in the papers saying " Asians only" or prefer Asian"
