Funnily enough I've just had my Mum send over the recipe she uses, the only trouble is that it uses Sarsons pickling vinegar. I've not looked yet but can you get that over here, that and pickling spices (although this bit involved black peppercorns and little chillies so I can just add 'em myself). My wife has already threatened me NOT to feed them to our daughter - guess it'll just be me stinking the house out!?!?

Don't think you can get Sarsons here, I've looked but never found it. The bigger supermarkets may have something similar, but vinegar doesn't seem as strong here (maybe I just haven't tried the right one?!) - certainly a dearth of it in chip shops.

I like my pickled onions and hubbie adores them we have tried loads of brands but none of them are quite right, they go soggy instead of crunchy very quickly so buy small jars at a time. The better ones I've found are the "Old Country" brand but like I said still not quite right.

I also loved pickled eggs in a bag of crisps (bought up in a pub) but haven't seen any here.

Still haven't got the guts to try a red or green coloured onion as that is just wrong wrong wrong I miss the tears in the eyes sort of onion you used to get maybe I should try doing it myself and see what happens.

Agreed - Old country do seem the best, and again I agree they do go soggy far too quickly !

I love all things pickled and I must say that pickled stuff here just isn't as good. The only passable pickles (cucumber) I've had here are 'Bicks'. I gave up on pickled onions here years ago. Try doing your own.

I think someone mentioned a few posts ago but the vinegar over here doesnt seem as strong as the UK stuff - any clues on a suitable brand for DIY pickling would be greatly recieved !

Heinz pickled onions are available here. The rest are too sweet. IMHO as is the Aussie beetroot. Not seen pickled eggs.

Nobody sells pickled eggs in the supermarkets here. BUT........

I have found my first jar of pickled eggs, ever, in Australia, been here for 5+years, so a great acheivement! .
I got them in a craft type shop in Tamborine Mountain. The label says made by "The crafty ladies"
3 Brook Street, Boonah, QLD, Aus
Ph 07 5463 1690
They make pickled onions as well, maybe give them a ring and ask if the supply any shops near you. Are you in Aus yet?
