Perth is beautiful (and quiet), but is the most isolated city in the world. If you`re into windsurfing though, it`s the 2nd windiest city in the world. I`d still go for a life in Brisbane, depending on jobs... and I was born in Perth.

oh and cyclones and torrrential rain and mozzys

so sod it brisbane, refined open friendly rural in a cosmopolitan sense and accessible to everywhere else on east coast

Our first choice is Cairns. Flights booked for the 30th March. We want to go somewhere different.

I've just got back to Brisbane after spending 3 weeks around Perth and it is a fantastic city, better than Brisbane (but not by much) excellent public transport, superb beaches, cheaper houseing, better climate (in Nov anyway) more chance of getting a beachside property cheaper than SE Qld.

Perth has for me far more positives than Brisbane, but one overwhelming negative it's isolation which means I won't be moving their anytime soon. So if you can handle the isolation my vote would go to Perth.

Came back via Indian Pacific and that took 40 hours just to Adelaide (3,000kms). Distances are huge in Australia generally but in WA they are mind boggleing.

As other posters have said Brisbane can be more humid in the summer but with coastal areas like the Redcliffe peninsula 20kms from Brisbane CBD, Sunshine Coast 60 mins away and Sunshine Coast about 90 mins north I think it has more to offer.

Just my personal opinion mind

I have attached a document that I got off here a while back that discusses a load of areas surrounding Brisbane. Hope it helps.
Totally agree with above. We visited, in July last year, Brisbane and the Gold Coast then Perth - we really missed the Gold Coast all the time we were in Perth. Houses are soooo cheap in Perth though and we did visit Mandurah - it was a Sunday and it was their winter and compared to the Gold Coast it just seemed soooo quiet. It's probably a lot better in the summer. Perth city seemed only as busy as your average town. We thought the beaches on the East Coast were out of this world and just a lot more going on if you want it.

Just our opinion though and made after quite a short time in each place so it's just first impressions really.

Hi Guys
Here's my 2 cents worth, I travel all around Australia with my work, which is great for me, but I constantly come up against the TOO ISOLATED quote, which I find annoying. Isolated from what????
If you want to travel within Oz, then yes I can see your point, living in the Eastern States it is a lot easier to travel up and down the coast...cost wise, but WA has everything that I want out of life. It has enough of a city life for me, I came from Torquay in the UK so never lived in a big city, and never wanted too. In Perth I have my family, or some of it, my job and everything that I could possibly want...so tell me what I am isolated from??????
The beaches are great, the lifestyle is fantastic and the people are friendly and approachable. Flight prices to the east are coming down all the time and when I travel interstate for personal reasons I find it easy and inexpensive.
I lived in the UK until my late twenties, had a resaonably paid job yet ventured to Europe on very few occasions throughout my life, and in fact knew many people who had not ever left the UK in their lives.
In my humble opinion if you are looking for a city life ie London like, then Perth is not the place for you, but if you want a good standard of living and outdoor lifestyle away from all the bad things that built up metropolis can bring, Perth is the place for you.

By the way, I love Brisbane, Adelaide and parts of Sydney.

Perth is no more isolated from Sydney/Brisbane than Newcastle/Glasgow from London. If you were to cycle to London it would about the same amount of time as driving from Perth to Sydney ie about 50 hours. 50 hours is too long so you move up a level of transport driving or flying. It's about a 5 hour drive from Newcastle to London and about 5 hours flight from Perth to Sydney.

Well thats my theory anyway, and I keep thinking that whenever I realise I'm living in the arse end of the world, Perth.

And a question how can you be isolated in Perth when your surrounded by a 1,500,000 others?

Obviously we need to go out and look for ourselves, but various people have commented that Perth is lovely but, very isolated from the rest of Oz.
We have spoken to a lot of people and they recommend Queensland /Brisbane or just above.
I realise it all depends on what we want and everyone is different, but has anyone had any experiences of living and working in both Perth or Brisbane and how do they compare?
All comments good or bad would be appreciated.

It's like this mate, it ain't a hard decision - ya getting out of the UK right?? - then whatever decision you make is a good one!

I have lived in Perth (this time round) just over a year, we have 3 kids, 14, 10 & 9 and life is very good to them, the weather is good all year round, there isn't too much crime (yes before any body else responds I know there is crime but compared to the UK - come on!), there's heaps of sports for them to do, and you can plan pretty much anything in advance coz the weather is good!

Yes we are isolated (that's good, it means not too many people want to come and live here!)

But I am sure wheverever you decide it will be the right decision for you - lets be honest nowhere is for ever, so if you choose Brissy then change your mind, so be it!!

Good Luck!

I never thought Perth's isolation would affect me but my dad was on business there. Financial and time constraints meant I could not have visited whereas if he had been on the East coast I am sure I could have had 2 days with him.

Hello from sunny London ( amazing )

Interesting thread, me too in the same situation either to go to Perth or Brisbane although i have included Adelaide too. Never been to Perth Or Adelaide, only to brisbane and i loved it, nice people, nice beaches in overal a really enjoyable city. But for what i have been reading Perth looks/sounds interesting too.

Im a 21 year old and has you probably guessed the choice is not easy, have been doing heaps of research and still not sure if i should go has an international student, or go via skilled migration visa this last one i would have to get a "skill" in need and get a full time job for a year and a half before applying, the problem is im a thinker, i think too much and dont get things done although im really looking forward to the process and the challenge.

Regards to all,
Pedro

( apologies if you there is spelling mistakes, im at work and dont have the time to double check the post, sorry )
