Oz-Is it a nanny state?

Re: Oz-Is it a nanny state?
$117 around here for parking within 10m of an intersection - they come around at 4am and book people in quiet backstreets who've parked in the only spot they could find. Some of them look nowhere near the corner but I guess 10m is 10m.

Why the heck do you need to park 10m from on intersection in a residential area?

It takes a bit more effort than pushing a button but it works for us.

Yes shit.
Same in the UK. Anything less and you'd have to slow down or increase the risk of an accident. Reaction distance at 50kph is 9m. Total stopping distance is 24. With those sorts of numbers you really need the car coming out of the side road to see you as soon as possible.

UK Highway Code:
Australia:
Council Rules include:
224. Cars, goods vehicles not exceeding 1525kg unladen, invalid carriages and motorcycles may be parked without lights on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit of 30 mph or less if they are
• at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow
• at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow
Council Rules include:
Because of the danger of obstructing drivers' views, it is an offence to park a vehicle within 10 metres of an intersection or junction of streets or roads. The 10 metres are taken from the edge of the gutter.

It isn't around here either
But the UK media, and other reports can paint a different picture...
But then, it'll be different in different areas, of both UK and Australia.

These days it's hard to do anything in England without paying for it, but when it comes to parking things are really getting ridiculous! In every town, on every street corner, you can be sure to see a gang of frenzied parking inspectors, on a mission to rinse you of all your cash for the slightest parking misdemeanour.
Things are so bad nowadays that even paying parkers who have left their car slightly over a white line, or touching the curb, are being given tickets, which can cost drivers hundreds of pounds!

Where it is safe to park less than 10m this is marked with signs. 10 m is only 2 parked cars (approx length 3 m plus 1 m spacing). Not worth the reduction in visibility. Or the reduction in turning space.

It drives me nuts here in the UK. People even park opposite a T junction.
Appologies those who have seen this before.
Notice how people don't care where they park or what they obstruct here. This is in my area and bad parking is not punished - ever!
