"After a tough start, we've created jobs for Queenslanders for nine straight months now," Ms Bligh said. "Queensland was the biggest jobs-generating state in the country – more than one third of the 18,300 jobs created Australia-wide last month were created right here in Queensland."
I have never seen any difference personally after such Advertisements. Its called bait. Its a nice way to advertise and bring overseas people to a place where housing and living is expensive.Australian market need more competitors to bring prices down and end the monopoly of well know historic players....

Personally, like anywhere, I doubt the prime motivation of local journalists/politicians is to advertise through the local paper to potential migrants who might stumble across it. It will be mainly aimed at informing the local population in my opinion. Prices are relative to wages so I haven't seen any proof that people are living easier in comparable places. Of course migrating from a weaker economy without sufficient capital might prove too expensive.

You do realise that it looks expensive to you because you are comparing Australia to the UK when the pound is the weakest it has ever been. You should be looking at it from a percentage of your wage point of view-

In Australia I earn $1,000 per week and pay $290 rent
In the UK I earned £350 per week for the same job and paid £100 per week

So, roughly about the same. So it isn't all that crazy. Don't compare $ values to your pounds Stirling, it is a waste of time.

You'll find in the North East that it's like Lemmings and all wrapped up in history of what's gone before as much as politics. So people would rather vote Labour and jump off the cliff than vote Tory, even though all the figure heads have changed 'die hards' seem to see it more as good against evil rather than political parties.

but £198k is 7.2 times the Average Male Full time total earnings in UK
£130k should be compared, as that is 4.7 times the UK wage.

What does £130k buy in England near the water ? It would be interesting to compare.

Property prices however have risen, but unfortunately for those buying with GBP, it is the FX rate that is the crippling factor at the moment.
£130k a few years ago would have been $370k, not the current $215k

An example of some ACTUAL sales historical figures in my area:
House 1
Nov 2000 $220,000
Jul 2006 $385,500
Oct 2008 $415,000

House 2
May 1998 $220,000
Jun 1999 $230,000
Apr 2001 $255,000
Dec 2002 $385,000

House 3
Mar 2003 $349,000
Apr 2008 $507,000

House 4
Mar 2003 $315,000
Jun 2006 $384,000
Aug 2007 $447,000

These are actual house sale records, not averages.

But going back a bit further, when Brisbane prices were not as high:
House 5
Mar 1995 $175,000
Oct 1999 $180,000

House 6
Nov 1997 $173,000
Mar 2001 $193,000
Oct 2005 $388,000

I'll be adding some 2010 sales to my info soon, comparing actual houses that have sold a few times with a recent 2010 sale, so I can see the real movements.
