I like being able to buy strawberries for most/all of the year for $1.50 a punnet, but some of the other fruit does seem HUGE - it makes you wonder what fertilizers or whatever they put on it to get it that big. And I saw the most humungus chicken breast the other day, how it got that big I just don't know, I didn't know you get chickens that BIG. I just wonder what sort of hormones they injected into it???
Anyone out there know where you can get Californian Zinfandel?

I miss all the institutional British shops.
Don't know for the life of me how these foreigners survived 200 years without them.
Must be damned peculiar people.
Good job there's an abundance of wildlife for food and broad leafed vegetation to cover their bits with.
I've spent every waking moment since being here trying to ejucate em about what they should be missing in their daily lives but they don't take any notice.
I mean, honestly, can you believe it ?

I must be one of the few people on this forum who shops separately. Yes I do my large weekly shop at Tesco for basics, but go to my village butcher for meat and our village farm shop for fruit and veg. They do pick your own fruit/veg year round and all sorts of yummy cakes, ices cream and local hams and cheeses. We buy our booze from the village store or the offie - they've always got special deals on.
Are there farm shops or something similar in WA?
BTW before I get my head bitten off I know not everyone lives in a small village in the sticks like me and does need to have everything under one roof. I did when I lived in London.

its 10 years since i was last in aus, but i still DESPISE shopping in tescos/sainsburys/etc.
I loved doing the weekly shop when i was in aus....granted i was in a nice bit of sydney (balmoral, but shopped all over, quick trip to manly etc), but i loved the variety of fresh stuff you could get.....the grocers/butchers were so nice...good choices. It was also a great stroll down to the bottle shop on balmoral front......a regular trip too, usually when the girls i was staying with had finished their shift!
as i said, i still despair of the tripe they sell you in uk supermarkets, and I certainly wont miss them. I now shop in the markets/butchers/grocers, but have to do online shopping to save time!
to the op - i hope you soon get accustomed to the aus way of shopping......i can truly imagine the dispair you feel!

.....it's strange cos I actually found shoppin easier in UK only cos everything was in one store and I'm a lazy mare. But.....as daft as it sounds I love the "quaintessential" way it feels here.
Shoppins a bit "backwardy" in a shoppin sort of way, wot wi goin to all the different shops...but it has that *villagy*/ *Waltons* kinda feel to it......and it's this I like best.
I suppose wot Im tryin to say is that we have the best of all worlds. We got the big Coles/Woolwoths etc where you can get everything you want/need...and then there's the ikkle fruit barns or butchers or corner type shops where you get to speak to the shop staff and things are a bit more personal.
So .....I reckon we got the best of both worlds don't you
When you gonna be here BTW. Seems a long time comin

We've only just started using Tesco as they've opened a huge one near us in Stockport and there's another Tesco homestore opening only a couple of miles or three away.
So far we love it and much prefer it to Sainsburys.
I'm not too worried about supermarket shopping in Aus as that's what husbands are for, I never shop if I don't want to but then that's because probably because I hate Sainsburys.

ooh, dont ask!
well, basically i dropped my hours at work to 13 without realising it would stop us applying for the visa!! was going to work my nuts off, but have since found out we can go on hubbys skills (hes a plasterer). just getting tra together now.....so if you know anyone who has done a tra as a plasterer, gimme a shout!! the lovely kris maynard has been v.v.v.helpful so far!!
So, hopefully next year, rather than in a couple of years time. (I hate my job as a nurse....i cant bear going to work, so having to work for 20 hours a week for the next 12 months sent me into to horrendous depression! )
