Migrants, my house is absolutely freezing...

Re: Migrants, my house is absolutely freezing...
I just bet no one really beleives this in the UK
I'll put it another way, My 21 year old daughter has just sailed through A M Keynes winter. When it got down to Zero a couple of days, the locals expected her to curl up in a ball, She explained that she "really had been colder", and that she "thought the houses were too hot" I was slightly suprised at her reaction myself.
After reading this though, maybe I shouldn't be.

Re: Migrants, my house is absolutely freezing...
This is our 2nd winter in Australia (this time around) and both me & hubby can't remember ever being so cold, not in your house at any rate!
I grew up in Manchester, hubby in Nottinghamshire and we lived in Norwich for 9yrs but we always had lovely gas or coal central heating.
Where we are living at the moment it has got down to almost -5 at night on quite a few occasions (and winter has only just begun), and it is consistently below zero overnight.
We are renting at the moment and have just one gas heater in the lounge, we did go out and buy another heater, an 11 fin electric oil heater but that doesn't quite cover the rest of the 6 rooms of the house that need heating up!
I wouldn't mind so much if we were saving on fuel bills but our electric bill alone for this quarter is more than we paid for gas & electric in the UK and we just to have our central heating on 24hrs a day (just turned the thermostat up/down to suit)
However, its all a trade off, isn't it? We certainly wouldn't have got beautiful sunny clear blue skies during the day in winter in the UK. At least the days are brighter and warmer (outside) here.
We did come here for a more outdoor lifestyle ... we just didn't realise that meant going outside to warm ourselves up because our house is so cold!
Brrrr ...

Gaps under doors, ill-fitting windows, wooden houses with thinner walls than UK people are used to - all adds up. (Doesn't help having a husband who leaves all the doors open at 10pm with an outside temp of 9 degrees while he searches for his phone either, but thats my problem not yours )

Now we have installed a wood combustion fire and it's really great, would not be without it, mind you having said that it does not heat our bedrooms,so we just scuttle from warm rooms to cold bedrooms :scared:
