Spot on...also...a couple of years back, winter here saw 15 to 16 degrees by 4.00 pm most days...what they don't tell you is the near frost that goes with it every night and the 15 degrees published as the max lasts for about 5 minutes.
My first winter saw me in short sleeves during the afternoon..now it's a vest, a shirt, a jumper and a jacket!

Weather forecast and temperatures are misleading when you are comparing Melbourne with Sydney or the UK. Melbourne is as bleak and gloomy as almost the UK in my opinion, especially after living in Queensland and Sydney, it was unbearable. Probably simply because of lack of central heating etc. The place looks really sad in winter. If it is 12 degrees max in Melbourne during the day, it means it will reach 12 degrees for half an hour or 1 hour then 5-6 degrees the rest of the day and windy! If 17 degrees that same day in Sydney, it means it will be 17 at least for a good six hours during the day.
So don't be misled by those Melbourne temperatures, the place is freezing in winter, especially in the mornings, my God!

I remember taking a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne in the middle of winter. It was all nice and sunny, green subtropical trees, people wearing shorts and all colorful in Queensland. I got to Melbourne Airport, everyone wearing dark colors- navy or black, coats, jackets and all that, a typical cold and rainy winter day in Melbourne. So depressing it was.

So its all about the weather?
Can you tell me how it can be 5 or 6 for most of the day and then shoot to 12or 13 degrees for an hour?

What crap... You are coming up with utter shite to try and make Melbourne look like a miserable place...
One analogy.... How come the best cities in the world get cold and variable weather, New York, London, Paris, San Francisco... Any European City, Tokyo, Sydney, Vancouver, Chicago...Blah Blah Blah but are not percieved to be miserable at any time? but because Melbourne is in Australia, its like its doesnt fit in with everyones expectations of what an aussie city should be (sunny and warm year round)!
You could take a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne in the summer and it could easily be pissing down and 28 in Brissy and get to Melbourne and be 38 and sunny, So its just ridiclous comparisons!
Everyone knows that Melbourne is cloudier and cooler than other mainland cities in Winter time!

Mine too Crow, just didn't have the energy to sit down and type everything at 3am at night, and weather is the topic of this thread not my life story
And We all have different expectations, likes and dislikes.
Who wants those 40-45 degree very hot days in summer, usually followed by 18 degrees late in the afternoon, or next day? I remember going down to the beach at Portsea, on a 35 degree day in the middle of summer (in Melbourne), by the time we got there from Melbourne it was already 16 degrees, we were sitting on the beach freezing our bits off.

Anyone who hasn't experienced Melbourne weather (and further afield) could be forgiven for thinking that we are all hallucinating. However, just to add to the mix, here are some examples of what I have experienced while being here.
At the local pool. 42 degrees, all wilting in the heat with legs dangled in the water. Ten minutes later, 20 degrees, all frozen.
Foggy until 2.00 pm. Temp about 8 degrees, sun comes out, up to 18 degrees in no time. 6 degrees again by 6.00 pm.
Only one night like this, over 30 all night.

I'm not worried by a 3 month winter - I like the change in seasons. I know that others don't want this - but to say it's freezing, grim, dull etc... is still silly

Going back to the original poster's question, just prepare yourself for cold winters, that way you'll be pleasantly surprised when you find it isn't as bad as you'd expected.

If you want to be very technical and scientific then you can probably compare daily melbourne temps in june/ july with daily temps in your UK hometown in Dec/Jan.

I've been in Melbourne 2 weeks now and I have to admit I wasn't very prepared for the weather!
That said, I was just coming from a heatwave in the UK and I have climatised since I've got here but I can't wait for spring/summer to arrive
I understand how it is difficult to explain/expect certain types of weather now as well as it can be warm but turn freezing cold within a few minutes/hours so you really do need to be prepared for all kinds of weather, I am really enjoying the bright sunny days though and it is nowhere near as cold as it would be in the UK at this time of the year in winter.

Not long to go until spring and summer. It starts to warm up a bit in October down your way, you'll love it I'm sure.

I can't say I've ever really noticed or rather been bothered by these massive temp changes - cool changes on a stinking hot day are univerally welcomed..and some days take a while to get hot..that's all..
It's true though that many people prefer 33 with humidity consistently than 42 and 18. That is extreme for Melbourne and Melbourne often posts day after day of 33, 35 ..

I'm heading to Melbourne next week from the UK (can't wait
). I'll be there for 6 months and wondered how cold the winters actually are when compared to the UK.
Do you think I'll actually find it very cold - any recommendations for what to wear - thick coat? lots of layers or could I get away with wearing a few layers?

Not sure where this 'Melbourne hot in summer' reputation has come from. Last summer there were 23 days above 30C (25%), 13 days above 35C (14%) and one over 40C. (around 1%)
That leaves 67 days or 75% of days under 30C maximum. Last summer was well above average temperature wise as well.
Brisbane on the other hand had 55 days out of 90 above 30C (61%), 10 of those days were above 33C as well, the lowest maximum recorded for the whole of summer was 26C in December.
That's the big difference, Melbourne might get the odd period of very hot weather with some extreme days but in Brisbane it is day after day, inescapable and combined with constant humidity.
Crystal clear sunny day in Melbourne today with no wind, so not quite the dreary hole that some people from up north seem to think it is.
