One of the big misconceptions people have before moving here. Was speaking to my brother the other week and he said "must be good having empty roads and not get stuck in traffic"

Everyone thinks we all live in houses on large blocks with roos jumping across the block, in rural areas where everyone seems content and happy maybe not far from a city. Where we can drive around undulating hills and vallies and never get caught in traffic.

I do (!) - but deliberately chose not to go the legoland route as I knew it would end in tears.

'Legoland' to me means a little over contrived and planned.....a bit like the 'new towns' in the U.K during the 1960's. There is no character in these places.

I agree..no character, too many suburbs, too many houses, tin roofs, not a soul to be seen, houses built so shabbily..lego-land couldn't describe it better.

It does not remind me of lego, but I could not live there myself. It looks like you have your back fence about a metre from the house. It looks like you could drop things off your verandah and they could fall outside the property. In the first picture there seems to be another building about a metre from yours, so either you have a big extension or close neighbours.

I think that is one of the main things people do not like about these suburbs - the houses are squeezed onto tiny blocks very close to each other.

Hard to judge whether this is the type of place for you without visiting - some people like the feeling of community. Personally, I prefer my neighbours out of earshot, but it would be a sad world if we all liked the same things.

Cheers,

DagBoy

It is a bit weird.

The explanation for seeing noone is largely due to the fact that everyone drives, and people socialise at the back of their houses. Also the heat in summer.

The knockers will probably have us believe it is all symptomatic of a mass breakdown in the Australian social order because you don't see a man with a dog walking to the local corner shop - which - actually you do see - err - even in the new estates err so I'll take that back. Some new estates do have a milk bar right in the middle - looks quite strange like the centre of a maze - you've gone left -left-left to get there, now it's have a rest and right-right-right to get back out...

You know what I mean.

It is quiet where we are, but for the endless convoys of 4x4s. But people are alive and well on their blocks and visiting friends. There is a constant stream of people on horseback - our road is a designated bridleway, and people walking/jogging, kids walking the several k(!) to school, kids walking back from scout camp.

That example is not bad at all. I've seen far worse.

Agree with the rest of yours & Jan's post though .

It's the sort of place that you go & can honestly say "Didnt know roof tiles came in that many shades of red" .

Thank you for all the replies and for posting the pictures, gives me a good idea of what to expect when i visit these places this march.

i like the idea of having a community feel to it but i can see now that the noise would be a problem since my 3 kids can be quite rowdy. if you can hear a neighbors TV, they will definitely hear my kids running around....

cheers! oh its friday.....time for some

Drive from Perth south to Mandurah & beyond. Around the Secret Harbour 'development' & further south you drive past rows & rows of relatively small houses with about a 2 metre gap between them & with 3-4 metre back 'yards' (strips really) then a back wall about 4-5 metres from the always busy freeway. Thousand more of these shitboxes are still being built. You drive past kilometers of this crap. How this can be called progress is beyond me & the fact that they are being built in a country with so much liveable space is a scandal. It will be interesting to see what these suburbs look like in 20 years time.
