Tony Benn could have run a surplus then. I recall Rudd promising not to do the pork barrell wastage Johnny was up to at the time. John Howard was also a crap treasurer in the past made to look good by multiple awful opposition leaders.

With the surplus left over from the Libs. What will Labor do now they don't have the luxury of a surplus to play with if we enter a double dip recession?

They had been in power for about 12 months before the GFC hit Aussie shores.

I was listening to the announcement on the radio yesterday. Don't know his name but the independent that declared his choice last - my God he milked it for all he could didn't he? He just went on and on. This kids and I were yelling at the radio for him to just get on with it. As I said, I don't know who he is or where he is from but it has put me right off him.

Liberal spin, they would have governed in a heartbeat given the chance.

Of course they would - they have the country's interests at heart and know they would do a better job but I think even the best of them would have known it isnt going to be an easy ride.

Its not going to be an easy ride, nor was it an easy ride through the GFC but Labor got Australia through it with a world beating economic performance. They have earned the right to be considered good economic managers, look at their record over the last 3 years. You may not like pink batts or the Rudd knifing but dont confuse that with who is better at managing the economy, the country is safe in Labors hands.

I have been here 8 weeks and as I can't vote have enjoyed being able to ignore the campaigns, so I have no preference. But I understand that the Coalition got more votes, so I don't understand what Labor are doing clinging on to power, IMO they have no moral right to be there. I would never put my party preferences above that basic principle.

Labor were and will be a disaster for the economy. Given the strong economy that they inherited blind freddy could have done just as well and not frittered it away as they did leaving us with a huge debt. They started their reign by talking down the economy when they should have been talking it up, they stimulated when they should have sat on their hands, they put measures into place which saw thousands of people unable to access their own money. Like most Labor governments they have been a shambles with the tax payer dollar and will continue to chuck it away willy nilly and need to wrest even more out of the poor productive suckers.

You understand wrongly.

LAB+GRN+Independents have about 500,000 more votes than LIB+LNQ+NATs

Also the Nationals managed to win 7 seats with 461,000 votes whereas the Greens only managed to win 1 seat with 1,450,000 votes, do you consider this to be a fair distribution of seats to votes?

Haha and you know all of this because of your background in economics or have you been reading News International op-eds?

You are totally and demonstrably wrong on all counts, I could point you to references but you clearly dont want anything to upset your world view.

Haters gonna hate no matter what is said and done, so carry on hating. Not my problem

The Australian mining industry and the fact that China kept buying their output kept the country out of recession not the crazy "free money" schemes. These were only possible because of the surplus at the time.

"Stimulus" only takes demand away from tomorrow and brings it forward to today or worse, creates fake demand. All paid for with tax dollars that you me and business could have spent or invested in productive activities.

We certainly dodged a bullet with the first wave of the GFC but my worry is that there is this perception that the stimulus worked and when the next leg of this massive global correction hits whoever is in charge, Labor or Liberal will go for more of the same just like what Obama is doing right now. Short term it might have some effect but long term it will be disastrous for the AUD and the economy.

Libs/Lab both as bad as each other when it comes to this IMO.
