Labour has won
Come stability... Congrats Julia..

Re: Labour has won
It's not really a win - wouldn't have been for either side.
The independents have all said they won't block supply, and won't support any frivolous no-confidence votes. Other than that they've managed to add extra policy, and say on other issues they will vote how they like. |

I think they have won a poison chalice of their own making.

Let them screw up for a year or so, and then have another election. JTL |
Re: Labour has won
Is that so we can have the Coalition with [QUOTE=JackTheLad;8831124 minority government of self-agrandising indepedents and party backstabbers.

Re: Labour has won
You are probably right however Abbott will be walking on eggshells. I suspect the electorate will punish those seen to be rocking the boat. Policy will be so safe Abbott will have little ammo. I think lack of stability will come from Labour itself though.
Interesting that two ex nationals sided with labour rather than old colleagues. Two common themes were NBN and lack of trust in Abbott due to his costings. I think the latter was more important. The behaviour of the Greens will also determine if those protest votes stick or swing another way which would be more likely to be in favour of Labour.

Re: Labour has won
Labor didnt win anything except a very uncomfortable alliance with some folk who are going to make life in Australia even harder than it currently is. Mind you, I think it will implode fairly soon and hopefully the coalition will be back in force.

Re: Labour has won
I am pleased they deserve to stay, they saw us through the recent economic problems, I do not believe the coalition would have let us get off so lightly.
It was a poison chalice when labour came to power originally as the overseas money problems had just started and I think they did a good job. Libs lost me when they got rid of Turnbull. |

With the surplus left over from the Libs. What will Labor do now they don't have the luxury of a surplus to play with if we enter a double dip recession?
They had been in power for about 12 months before the GFC hit Aussie shores. |
Re: Labour has won
Tony Benn could have run a surplus then. I recall Rudd promising not to do the pork barrell wastage Johnny was up to at the time. John Howard was also a crap treasurer in the past made to look good by multiple awful opposition leaders.

Re: Labour has won
I was listening to the announcement on the radio yesterday. Don't know his name but the independent that declared his choice last - my God he milked it for all he could didn't he? He just went on and on. This kids and I were yelling at the radio for him to just get on with it. As I said, I don't know who he is or where he is from but it has put me right off him.

Re: Labour has won
I have been here 8 weeks and as I can't vote have enjoyed being able to ignore the campaigns, so I have no preference. But I understand that the Coalition got more votes, so I don't understand what Labor are doing clinging on to power, IMO they have no moral right to be there. I would never put my party preferences above that basic principle.

Its not going to be an easy ride, nor was it an easy ride through the GFC but Labor got Australia through it with a world beating economic performance. They have earned the right to be considered good economic managers, look at their record over the last 3 years. You may not like pink batts or the Rudd knifing but dont confuse that with who is better at managing the economy, the country is safe in Labors hands.

LAB+GRN+Independents have about 500,000 more votes than LIB+LNQ+NATs Also the Nationals managed to win 7 seats with 461,000 votes whereas the Greens only managed to win 1 seat with 1,450,000 votes, do you consider this to be a fair distribution of seats to votes? |

They started their reign by talking down the economy when they should have been talking it up, they stimulated when they should have sat on their hands, they put measures into place which saw thousands of people unable to access their own money. Like most Labor governments they have been a shambles with the tax payer dollar and will continue to chuck it away willy nilly and need to wrest even more out of the poor productive suckers.
You are totally and demonstrably wrong on all counts, I could point you to references but you clearly dont want anything to upset your world view. Haters gonna hate no matter what is said and done, so carry on hating. Not my problem |

"Stimulus" only takes demand away from tomorrow and brings it forward to today or worse, creates fake demand. All paid for with tax dollars that you me and business could have spent or invested in productive activities. We certainly dodged a bullet with the first wave of the GFC but my worry is that there is this perception that the stimulus worked and when the next leg of this massive global correction hits whoever is in charge, Labor or Liberal will go for more of the same just like what Obama is doing right now. Short term it might have some effect but long term it will be disastrous for the AUD and the economy. Libs/Lab both as bad as each other when it comes to this IMO. |

Libs/Lab both as bad as each other when it comes to this IMO. I do accept your point about China and resources sector boosting the Australian economy but think about this, Britain rode the north sea oil bubble but did nothing with the money apart from paying to keep people unemployed; the oil runs out and the country is screwed. We need to build something, some new industries a large sovereign wealth fund or whatever so that we don't follow the same path, racking up maximum surpluses is not necessarily the right way to plan for the time when the resource boom ends. |

Re: Labour has won
China watchers will also be aware that construction there is declining due to the government deflating a housing bubble.
Surpluses should be saved for a rainy day. Uk and USA have nothing left in the piggy bank if this is a double dipper. Best case is steady very slow growth.

I agree IMO a surplus is almost as bad as a deficit. It deprives taxpayers of choosing how to spend their money.

Australian Labor Party 5,863,546 Liberal/National Coalition 5,863,011 Only 435 in it now  However, if you look at the primary vote only, you get this for the top five parties:
The REAL winners are the residents of New England and Lyne, with a large chunk of money being spent in those electorates. Hope it makes up for the betrayal that those locals are feeling, http://www.theaustralian.com.au/nati...-1225915565052 |
