If it was bought in the High Street or online from Apple/O2 etc. in the UK, then it won't be jailbroken and should be SIM locked to O2 as they have the monopoly in the UK.
If it was bought from another source, say Ebay, then it may well be jailbroken. Easiest way to tell is to try using a non O2 SIM as the phone should refuse to work. If it works on a non O2 SIM then it's good to go! There are plenty of online guides for jailbreaking, though some are a little confusing. Once the phone has been JBed it's a simple matter of downloading the SIMUnlock App and installing it to be able to use other providers. Hope this babble helped! >A. best thing about a J/B iphone is all the free apps and games you can put on ;);) |
Re: iPhone direct from Apple
Apparently Apple exchange phones which break - they come with a standard warranty which covers water damage, so it may be worth taking it in to a store to see if they can help. |

Re: iPhone direct from Apple
all this talk of iPhone's has got me thinking!
initially i was going to buy an iphone on contract when we get to Oz in september. However, it seems pretty expensive to go onto quite a high tariff plan for potentially 2yrs for the 3Gs. has anyone, or would anyone recommend buying an unlocked iphone here in the uk from either apple or ebay and then just chucking a pay as you go one in when i get to Melbourne? i appreciate i may have warranty issues if i buy from ebay, but it seems that as long as the phone is unlocked it may be cheaper to take this option.. cheers. |

Any sim only recommendations for medium use data and calls in regional area? still thinking about Jail Breaking it here in readiness (naturally that would invalidate the warranty, but i'd be willing to take a chance on that one)...but i'd also be interested in peoples sim only recommendations. decisions, decisions... |
Re: iPhone direct from Apple
I spoke to O2 the other day and asked about unlocking my phone to move to Oz, they said it couldn't be done by them. I'm reluctant to jailbreak it, so I'd be intrigued to see if someone has jailbroken their phone and is happy with the result?

Re: iPhone direct from Apple
Still think the vodafone deal of 250mg data 360 minutes and 50 texts for $69/month is a good deal, its the only tariff that has offered minutes instead of monthly value that I have found here.

You could try something like Telstra prepaid (pay as you go) talk and text. When you recharge certain amounts you get free minutes and texts then you can use the money to buy data pack at about $10 per 100mb. |

Regional use and the iphone really has to be Telstra, they are expensive and customer service can be shocking, but there nextG (3G 850Mhz with HSDPA) network has far greater coverage than any of the other operators. Optus would be second but you will only get 3G in some regional centres and there new 3G regional roll out is on frequency not compatible with the iphone for 3G (its 3G 900Mhz network (that is different to working on 2G 900)).
