If it was bought in the High Street or online from Apple/O2 etc. in the UK, then it won't be jailbroken and should be SIM locked to O2 as they have the monopoly in the UK.
If it was bought from another source, say Ebay, then it may well be jailbroken.

Easiest way to tell is to try using a non O2 SIM as the phone should refuse to work. If it works on a non O2 SIM then it's good to go!


There are plenty of online guides for jailbreaking, though some are a little confusing. Once the phone has been JBed it's a simple matter of downloading the SIMUnlock App and installing it to be able to use other providers.

No, I was asking, if I got it jailbroken for the move to Australia, will it mess it up, or should it be ok!?

It was bought from O2 and I'm on O2 so while I'm in the UK it's fine....

Ah! No that would be fine! :D
And that was on advice I was given in an O2 shop.
The Phone monkey behind the counter advised me to jail break the phone for global use.

SO what is the comparable talk n tinternet plan in aus to the £40 jobbie o2 offer?
Gonna JB mine and get a virgin plan?
And without souning blonde(which I am) if I browse a few sites and that prob bout 30 mins a day on it,what meg or fancy name is that lot add up too?

Browse-plus gives you 100Mb per month for $10, doesn't seem to bad??

Anyone tried this? Got a JB'ed iPhone and a netbook so might end up getting two of em.

I have mine on $79 plan for two yrs through Optus, no payment for phone, 700mb for data and 550 dollars worth of calls and unlimited SMS - bloody fantastic and could not live without it - must have insurance at $8 per mth. Defo worth it, my son dropped his down the toilet, got it repaired on ins for only $50 excess.

I am interested to hear why it is considered better to buy outright rather than take a plan.

Take the 3GS 16G as an example:-

As outright purchase
Upfront cost = $879
Monthly cost = $TBA
Calls included = 0
Data inluded = 00
Total cost = $TBA

As 2 year contract plan
Three contract for 2 years
Upfront cost = $0
Calls included = $590/month
Data included = 250MB/month
Total cost = ($49/month + $5) * 24 months = $1296

I buy my phones outright. Why ? No contract at all.

If my phone kaks itself, I loose it, destroy it or whatnot its my problem and I dont have to pay out a contract.

Then there is the issue of network. You quote the 3 network. Sure its cheap. However if you try and use it in my house you will roam onto Telstra and pay through the nose despite the fact it is in a 3 broadband zone. Who can say where I will be in 18 months time, what if the network is patchy wherever there is. 3 is bad outside metro areas.

Then there is the small matter of what happens if your network service degrades. Take Vodafone for example. A look at the whirlpool.com for tales of terror about the broadband service they offer. If you are misfortunate enough to find yourself in a terribad broadband zone, tough - your stuck for 24 months.

I can travel internationally and put in any sim card I like into my phone rather than having to pay stupidly expensive.

So in short - flexibility, no contracts and living without the feeling that the telecom company has rights over your first born for a number of years. :thumbsup:

A lot of people don't want to be tied into a plan for 24 months. Circumstances change, and 24 months is a long commitment. Also, the caps and plans change so frequently, and are so hideously difficult to understand, it's quite difficult to understand exactly what you are paying for.

Apparently Apple exchange phones which break - they come with a standard warranty which covers water damage, so it may be worth taking it in to a store to see if they can help.

I bought one outright but am now getting stung with the cost of using it on a prepay - can anyone recommend a good provider / plan?
