Asylum Applications in Australia
Australia is bracing for an influx of asylum seekers, including 20,000 from southern China reportedly readying their exodus. Many of these asylum seekers are former residents of Vietnam who were forced to return to China.
Most illegal immigrants are detained until the Immigration Department has decided whether to accord them asylum as political refugees. Australia's High Court decided that no applicant for asylum can be held in detention longer than 273 days. Some applicants were held for two or three years, and the government is considering paying them about $1 for each day there were held.
Under new legislation, Australia does not grant asylum if the applicant has already been refused recognition as a political refugee by another country.
There are reportedly 80,000 illegal immigrants in Australia. Most arrived as tourists or students and overstayed their visas.
Australia's 1994-95 immigration target is 73,000, a 16 per cent or 10,000 increase over 1993-94. For 1995-96, the target will be 84,700. Australia has about 18 million people, and a 1992 average GNP of $17, 260.
According to the 1991 Census, a higher proportion of migrants receive pensions, sickness benefits and welfare payments than do people born in Australia.

Ah, deary me, you have made an awful assumption that the people with whom you associate are representative. Perhaps they are. Perhaps 'tis only "the dregs" who will associate with you. Perhaps "the dregs" emigrate specifically to be with you.

"You're welcome to it..."
Comprehension = you're welcome to Australia
"You're bollox will be the end of it".
Comprehension = more of your ilk immigrating and the end of Australia as I once knew it will be complete.
Insulted? By what?
