I'd say Melbourne during the day in Winter averages about 12 degrees, at night it can get down between 2 & 6 degrees. You will never have to scrape the ice off your car or clear the snow away.
You still get people comparing it to Winter in UK but I'm afraid where I came from in the Borders of Scotland, Winter in Melbourne is quite balmy.

Though in Sydney, I have to admit I needed the warm clothes more for the inside than when I went out. Our house traps the cold and it lingers...
OP - yes, it gets cold in Melbourne but I've never experienced again the sensation that my toes have been amputated (numb, frozen, stuck in snow, three pairs of socks and boots not enough, kind of feeling)

I would love to hear peoples experiences,

I'd say it gets to around 13-14, certainly not the high teens of Sydney attributable to winter sun.
It can drop to single digits at night but not for long. It's normally around 7 or so like other southern state capitals.
You will need a few layers, a winter coat not really required unless you're going to the footy and will be standing around.
Winter sun gives a fair bit of respite and there's alot more sun than the UK.
Sheilas still wear thongs in winter with their business dress.
You'll feel coldest in your home. Either you're a hard bastard like me, or you'll be suffering for months.

Hey... It was -15 C here the other day. I took my garbage to the curb wearing a t-shirt, it was a pretty cold... but not worth the effort of putting a coat on. Mind you I was in Northern Alberta, Canada. I imagine anyone in Australia might think I was a little crazy!
The first year we lived in our town (Fort McMurray) it got down to -45 a few times. I went to get groceries one day and my milk had turned to slush on the 5-10 minute drive home. Now that's f*ng cold!
I look forward to the day when I go outside and feel the need for a coat and toque when it's only 0 degrees

I miss the days we got snowed in (over 1 meter of snow piled up on the sidewalk) and school was cancelled.

True, but I never needed a coat in 14 years and that included living at Burrawang. Although we did have wood burning stove to heat the house during winter months.
