Don't know about a free one, but we use Unblockus.com and have it going through our router, so if I use my Nexus with wi-fi, it is using the VPN. Can't help with 3G though

I'm still researching for myself but there are some great tips here and it seems that a paid for vpn is only going to cost around $5 per month.

One that works and is free - yes - this one I have used a number of times on my Andoid tablet. Go to www.bestukvpn.com . HOWEVER - it is slow. I have used it with iPlayer but it buffers... A LOT. I have used this vpn with success to get apps from google play that are not available in Oz (because thanks to the vpn it thinks you're back in the UK). I did once run a speedtest.net whilst connected to the vpn and I think it registered barely 150k per second - which would explain the terrible iPlayer performance.

If you do go down this route, just bear in mind that all your devices, thanks to your router's vpn, would think they're in the UK. Could this potentially effect access to local services that only allow local connections?

Technically it may well be possible to tell your router to connect via the VPN rather than you individual device - but whilst geeks like me know some stuff (personally have over 20 years experience) it would be hard to advise exactly how to do it without being sat in front of your device. *starts touting for consultancy and callout fees* hehehe

unblockus is really easy to set up on the router. The website gives instructions for various different manufacturers. I set ours up and I am not techie at all If you need access to local services, you can just disable it via the website.

AHA. I did not realise unblock-us was a vpn - thought it was just one of those circumventor websites. This comment on their web page looks useful: "Be in different places at the same time. Appear in Canada for one web site and in UK for another.". Also like that it says you can try it for a week. Anyone here already use this service? What is throughput like (go to speedtest.net and what do upload/download speeds say)?
Before we got it, the fastest speed I noticed was only around 7 mbs
