As for why England is so rubbish, well all the things listed: government, chavves, weather, SAT's and school league tables, OfSTED (all the annoying things in a teacher's life) crime, shootings, muggings angry people in general. Fear lies in walking out of your house, who knows if you'll make it back without someone random person randomly shooting you or trying to blow you up!

You are so fortunate to be able to take your family with you. If i was in that situation i really wouldn't hesitate. I know what you mean about the crime in this country, i do worry about when my children get older and want to go clubbing/drinking with their mates - will they come home? - as the trouble out on the streets is just ridiculous. Go for it and good luck!

I was finding this thread really interesting until everyone wandered of the point and created 2 pages of nonsense. Could we keep it to advice so everyone can gain form it without having to read a totally different conversation?
I don't want abuse or comments about this, just suggesting it would be more productive.

Here here! I asked what i thought was a reasonable question hoping to get some informed opinions - which i think the majority are and i really appreciate them and respect everyones opinions - thank you - but i think it started to get slightly out of hand along the way. Please don't spoil it for the majority of us who are trying to help each other out! Thanks

The chanted ad nauseum is usually chanted to posters who know it all about oz without peering over the fence. As far as oz goes and the Uk for that matter I have no tinted glasses on about either. I know Australia well, probably better than the Uk.This is boring I don't like you, you don't like me end of story.

Thanks Ally
Am very close to making the right decision I feel. Australia really does seem like a better place to bring up children and now would be the best time to go.
This has been a very helpful thread to read. Thank you for starting it. I wish you every success with your application and you never know, might meet in Adelaide some day. I know you were thinking of living there. A good forum is www.pomsinadelaide.com the people on here are so helpful and friendly and it is slightly smaller and specific to Adelaide. A good website is: www.adelaidebound.com.

Also we know that wages will be a lot lower that over here so just seeing what is around at moment, obviously as he is the only one that works he will need to earn a decent amount of money. Have been told Singapore Airlines are the best to use so we will be using them next time. As I said on my previous post Gold Coast Queensland was not for us as I didn't like the humidity and some other things and Sydney was just to much like London for my liking and too expensive for housing for us. Hope this helps. Good luck. Corinne
Hi Corinne

Good luck to your OH with his job hunting, I'm sure he'll not have too many problems with Project Man skills. Thanks for the info on the flights, i'm glad i mentioned it as so many people have been really reassuring and have completely put my mind at rest - so that's one less thing to worry about! I too am a bit concerned about the humidity in GC - eventhough we like what we have seen of this area i don't think we could cope with it being too humid. So i think we will end up looking at Adelaide, Melbourne maybe. Thanks so much for your responses. Good luck.

I think the Uk is going the same way as Australia - look on findaproperty.co.uk and alot of affordable family homes are new bulds on estates....that grade listed farmhouse in the countryside in a village is not on every corner.(!)

I have family in Adelaide who never complain about there being 'no breeze'! There was plenty of 'breeze' when I was there a few years ago. Many say the weather is not much different to England except hotter in summer. Its nearer the south pole, it can't be that hot! not as hot as Darwin and areas around there which are very humid. Temperatures in winter are not unlike mild days in England, warm jumpers are needed in winter still.
This is very confusing.
Is there anywhere on earth that is ideal?!!!!!

Adelaide is in a natural basin, nowhere is perfect, but please research this a bit more.

I hope you aren't expecting your children to be able to go anywhere by themselves here either while they are under 10-12 and as for going to Night-clubs

Lovely link. Perth may have problems but this article from 3 years ago is nothing compared to what happens in England every day! But I don't want to start a conversation about that now.
Some of us just think that there must be somewhere better, we long for a change. The chance to follow a dream. It's a big decision we need support with. If it's safe to let children out alone at 10-12 then that's much safer than England. Mine would be 18 before they left the house alone.

Adelaide is famous for extended heat waves during the summer, when temperatures are up in the high 30's, low 40's for weeks on end. This is when the prevailing winds are coming from the north, blowing all that lovely heat down from the desert.

It's actually on approximately the same latitude (and proximity to desert) as Tripoli, in Libya. Now, you couldn't describe Tripoli as being close to the North Pole and having weather 'not much different to England', would you?

Who said anything about whilst they are under 10-12? My kids are the most precious things in my life and i certainly wouldn't be letting them go anywhere on their own under that age - in any country. Do kids over there go clubbing at 10-12???? I am talking about the kind of pub brawls, drunken knife attacks that occur frequently. That report you included was 3 years old and can happen anywhere.

geez, people pick apart every sentence, I said go anywhere under 10-12 alone, i.e. the park, walk to school. Sorry I forgot to spell it out. I then said AS FOR clubbing

I am just saying please don't have your blinker's on.

I guess it comes back to, try it, see for yourself. I long for a change too, but I do have my eye's open. I want the small flat (low maintenance, not a slave to the garden, and the dust), the close community, the atmosphere of a vibrant city with all it's problems.

I may be back in five years - to Tassie next time - but I will have seen the world in those five years.

This is just a general comment, not aimed specifically at one person but to anyone planning on moving here from the UK. I never experienced a lot of the stuff mentioned above whilst I lived there for over 40 years, but please don't assume that things are any different here. All that shit happens. It's a western country.

My children, when they were 10-12 ish were able to walk to friends or school alone because that was the sort of area we lived in. Just as not ALL Australia is fantastic and wonderful, Britain is not ALL muggings, rape and angry people with guns.

The worst thing that has happened to us happened here, not the UK. We still love the place but we never hated the UK.

The grass may be greener if you are being pulled to Australia. It won't be greener if you are being pushed from the UK.
