I'm sure most people wont mind as they know you will be moving, so i dont think it will be cheeky to ask for cash ! you might find they might be pleased not having to spend a day trawling the shops for a punchbowl or toaster etc !
Anyway you always know how much they spend when you go the the Argos catalogue !!!

Just do it as a wishing well (cash), put a poem in with your invites, this is what I use for some of my B2B's that I make stationery for:-

In our house we have the things
That living together normally brings
Most household items we've already bought
And becuase of this reason we thought
A wishing well would be great
(Only if gets wish to participate)
A gift of money is placed in an envelope
So in the future we hope
To furnish our home to its very best
And always remember
It was due to our guests!

Thank you all for your feedback. My head is still reeling with the idea of everything that is going on and sometimes it is hard to clear enough space to work something through and decide what to do about it! But I am beginning to come around to the realisation that under our unusual circumstances we could ask for money..... now I can tick that off and move onto the next project, my wedding dress!
