Ah yes. Those.

Multiplex was foolish to settle for such a cheap price in the first place; they could - and should - have charged a lot more. They also shot themselves in the foot by agreeing on a fixed price; how stupid was that?!

I can't help thinking that they were largely wooed by the kudos of being able to say "We built the new Wembley stadium."

Most of the biggest British construction firms seem to use the time-honoured method of forcing the buyer into unreasonable contracts, deliberately dragging out the construction period, hiking up the cost by suddenly "discovering" that the cost of the project had been "underestimated", and handing over a final (multi-million pound) bill to recoup what would otherwise have been a catastrophic loss. (Thus and thus.)

Multiplex should have paid closer attention to this practice, and followed suit.

I seem to remember listening to the news which said that the amount that Multiplex would have to pay to the FA is capped to a certain amount. Isn't this the first time Multiplex have made a loss on a construction contract?

The Wembley stadium site was evacuated after a 50-tonne steel rafter slipped 1.6ft, creating an "enormous bang".

About 3,500 workers were cleared from the site of the £757m project, already behind schedule, just before 0900 GMT.

The rafter was being welded in place at the time but the roof was not damaged, said builders Multiplex. Most staff are expected to go back to work on Tuesday.
Source.

I think it's bloody fantastic that an Aussie company has been chosen to build a replacement for England's most famous football stadium.

Just think of all that British money rolling into Australia, oh yes...
Except that they use workers living in Britain, buy their supplies from British and European firms and because of the penalty clauses they will have to pay for the late completion (largely down to the failure of another sub-contractor and their steel supplier having to be changed because the original one dropped out) it is unlikely that much profit will flow back to Head Office in Melbourne or Sydney.

Ironically, a few weeks ago there was also a collapsed beam in the new Scottish parliament building which was completed many years late at 10 times the original quote (not Multiplex).
