In spite of what some say, the Aussies actually can take a ribbing. They just don't like it:D

They are the school bully who can dish it out (notice how much the Aussies like to take the piss out of other nationalities/ethnicities and call them unflattering nicknames) but if some criticism or humour is directed at them they generally (I am sure there are exceptions blah, blah, blah) seem to respond like a kid at school who goes to pieces when his hostile behaviour is turned back on him.

My father-in-law will defend Australia to the cows come home and gets visibly troubled by any criticism of it.

At some point in history someone decided that it's politically incorrect to criticise Australia.

Telling an Aussie that you don't like something about Australia is like telling a staunch Catholic that you don't believe in God.

It's devoult catholic....it's staunch Protestant

I think you actually mean 'devout' but let's not get too picky.

This whole thread is pretty funny. Find me one nation where there AREN'T people who think their country is the best. Just because a few of those types exist doesn't mean everyone's like that. Because guess what, those people exist EVERYWHERE. Even in Britain. I know when I visited London a few years ago people would give me shit for my accent and act superior to me purely because I was Australian. This isn't a problem that's relevant to Australia only and you Brits are not immune to such arrogance yourselves. The difference is some people are able to acknowledge that there will ALWAYS be rude individuals who are like that, and we don't judge entire countries on the behaviour of few people.

TBH when Aussies rib Brits it's usually in good nature. We presume you can take a joke. You can think it's arrogance but it's actually humour. I'm also reading a lot of hypocrisy in this thread. So it's cool for Brits to bitch about the Australian culture, but if Aussies do the same back to you guys they're xenophobic and arrogant? Please tell me I'm not the only one amused by this double standard!

I'm not a nationalist. Australia's far from perfect, in fact I'm aiming to move to the UK in a years time. But most of the whinging in this thread is retarded.

Excellent first post and welcome to BE.

There is defo a cultural difference between UK and Australia.
As a generalization Brits tend to run the UK down and Australians big up Australia. I really wish it was the Brits who shouted a bit more about the positives of the UK but its not something we tend to do... but we wouldn't tell an Aussie that. :)

Thank you very much iamthecreaturefromuranus (oo-er!!!)

I understand what you mean when you talk about how Brits are generally quite self-deprecating. I have a friend at work who's from Brighton, and when he was here the only time he'd ever stick up for his country was when sports was involved. Particularly cricket. ;) Maybe it's just the way I interpret things but I always just chalk it up to humour. In my circles, ribbing is always done in jest and both Aussies and Brits can take it as good as they dish it. There will always be a bit of rivalry between the two nations that Aussies will play up for a laugh and a bit of competition, but it's rarely ever mean-spirited. :) To those who are complaining about this problem, I suggest two things: either you are only associating with bogans who are the SCUM of Australia and rather ignorant, or you need to lighten up and stop taking what people say so seriously.

Whinging and Retarded, wow.

Enjoy the UK , I'm sure most Brits will welcome you thats just the way they are.

I think you will find it's PEOPLE who do the bitching, irrespective of nationality.

Sorry to disagree,

I lived in Australia for nine years , Sydney and Brisbane , and yes many Aussies are good natured and have a sense of humour , however there is a growing number of younger Australians who appear to hate the English , without any good reason.
The TV and media in Australia don't help this as they are far too jingoistic , it's not just about sport , they appear to be hanging on to the past , a time when none of them existed ....must have very long memories.
I once worked with an Aussie gentleman who refered to whinging poms most every day , he wasn't directing it at me but it was still irritating .
After several months of this I refered to him as a "big mouth aussie" , he didn't like this at all and the atmosphere at work was very frosty after that .
I ended up changing jobs as it wasn't worth the miserable atmosphere in my work place.
But thats just one small example , we all like some fun but it has to work both ways, can you imagine headlines in British newspapers about big mouth aussies in the same way aussies have headlines about whinging poms ?

Anyway you will enjoy the UK , my wife does and she is from Sydney , she has been made very welcome here and any humour is very light indeed about Aussies, nothing on the level of abuse I heard ...as I say it wasn't aimed at me but the English in general, some of it was below the belt trust me.

I honestly believe that once you had made the decision to leave your job then you should have retracted your "big mouth Aussie" statement and gone for gold with "Stupid twat!"....
