They only need the health checks max of 3 days before they fly so the vet didn't need to do them then...I would definitely question the reason for doing this..
Did you keep the rest of the pack of Frontline?? If not I would also be asking for that if I'd paid for them...Sounds like your vet is trying to pull a fast one as he thinks you haven't got a clue about the export requirements...I'd contact them and request explanations for each of the areas your unhappy about. Take the information from DEFRA and AQIS with you to show them you are well clued up on the requirements for your pets.. I have had to supply my vet with all the info as he didn't really have much of a clue having not completed and Aussie pet export before!! He has phoned me twice to check that I am all sorted with the paperwork and was shocked at how orgainsed I was when I took my dog in!! I think there are many unscrupulous people out there who think they can make more money for doing things that aren't necessary at the time!
Go for it girl!!!!!

Yes, I have got the rest of the frontline.

I am usually quite happy with our vets but was really annoyed yesterday.
I took the stuff in from the shippers about a month ago and they photocopied it all, this was so that they could have a leisurely look at it. That way, so I thought they would know what to do when I took them in. When I went they didn't appear to have a clue and when I asked if anybody had read it the vet said it was up to me to find out what was needed :curse:

I felt that I had done that and even handed them the info on a plate so to speak. She still said, theres only 1 vet who is authorised to declare them fit for travel I told her yet again that I didnt need them to do that as the shippers own vets were seeing to that.

I'm not impressed

I don't blame you for being angry with them... I'd definitely request, in writing, a breakdown of the charges and a reason for completing the medicals... if they state it was for export then you can counter them with the official documentation regarding medical clearances.

Good Luck!!

I spoke to them this morning. The receptionist told me they admit them as it's difficult for them to hold them so they need to make sure there are staff available so they can do it, which says to me it's for their convenience.

After I complained she said she would ring me back. She then had a different story. Apparently, they need to make sure there isn't a problem with the blood ie, clotting Surely, if the blood is collected properly then it shouldnt clot!

They also like to observe them for a few hours afterwards and take them for a walk (I dont believe they took them for a walk!). They didn't have a general anaesthetic, they only had some blood taken

I have now written a fomal letter of complaint to the manager. I don't expect anything to come of it. Apart from I'll be scared to go and collect the results for the blood tests

Wait untill you book their flights ect!
Our dog cost us more than it cost us to fly over, but it was worth every penny, and would still be at twice the price.

Hi Tracey

I had my dog to the vets last Monday for her blood test, they took her out the back she was only away for 5 - 10 mins, then they applied the frontline and they also gave me a letter to say it had been applied immediately after the blood test was taken, then I had to pay £60(that did not include the cost of the test as they didn't know what the lab was going to charge). Then on Monday(30th July) I got a call to say she has failed the erlichia test and had to take her straight down to the vets, she is now on antibiotics (another £120) and is being re-tested on Friday. So I'm keeping fingers crossed she passes this time as she flies on 19th August.

Sounds like they are trying to justify the charges!! I'd phone a few vets in the local area and ask them their procedure for blood sampling from dogs...reading some of the replies on here it took 10mins tops for the rest of us and the dogs were straight back.....something not quite right with your vets need to keep the dogs in for a few hours....also if they knew you were going down for the blood tests to be taken then why didn't they make sure a vet and nurse were available at the time for the blood sampling????
Good luck with the complaint letter...

Hi Karin

My dog failed his blood test for Erchlicia (sp?) too? You have been charged an excessive amount for the antibiotics, I was charged £16.50 for 11 days worth for my dog. When I enquired the cost with the vet I was told tetracycline was a very cheap drug so wouldn't be expensive.

It does seem a lot of vets seem to make up the fees as they go along.

Good luck with the second test.

No it doesnt, they were around $700-$800 and it cost $405 to get them from Sydney to Gold Coast. Hope that helps. C x

I'm starting to think the dogs are nearly as stressful as the selling of the house.

Who'd have thought all these years later I would think of the visa application as a walk in the park compared to everything that comes after it

I have to agree with you there!! I think the paperwork etc for taking pets to Aus is much harder and more stressful than the visa app..... I never thought anything could be any more work or stress
