Charlotte Pass, in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains recorded -23 a few years back. The Snowies frequently get days in winter when the temperature remains below freezing. I think the all time lowest recorded temp for the UK (somewhere in Scotland) was about -26, so not much difference. Canberra's coldest recorded temp was -10 which is quite chilly. So yes, some parts of OZ get cold.

Oh yes. It's called acclimatising! It's a nightmare, you know in your head that it's not really cold but by god you're freezing. Couldn't do without our wood burner now and our house is fairly well insulated. Even now, in summer we still have our 4.5 tog duvet on the bed. In winter we clip the 9 tog one to it and sometimes I need a hot water bottle as well If one more person says 'but you're from England!' I'll do them damage

Yep I suppose that's about right. I come from sub-tropical Africa, so it will bring back memories.

I don't know I will cope if my wife acclimatises and thinks 25 degrees is cold and puts the extra thick doona on the bed.

High altitude tropical African cities have the best climates in the world. I spent some time in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia and it is famous for its eternal spring-like weather. It's about 2400 metres above sea level (you feel it when you walk up a flight of stairs), but the weather was fabulous. Deep blue skies, dazzling sunshine, low humidity and day time temps in the low twenties all year round. Nights were a bit on the chilly side. They have a lot of eucalyptus trees there so sometimes it looks just like Australia - until you see a donkey (or even some old lady) with a huge pile of wood on its back.

I agree, the higher altitude African climates are great .

Well I have
my leather CFM boots for winter and I certainly get cold enough to wear them.

When people say it is cold, ask them what they are wearing at the time....

It was a bit overcast earlier on and I began to feel it was a bit cold, so I was wondering whether to put a shirt on or not !!

It made me realise, that even though in the winter it gets cold, I never wear a jumper.
And gloves and a scarf are just old fading memories.

A light jacket and long sleeve shirts and long trousers keep me from getting cold in the worst of the winter.

That's how I like it - the minimalist look, AKA 'T' shirt, shorts and flops.

Saves $$$$ on clothes also.
