Guys,
I think it would be easier to just get on a plane and fly to Australia so it really is a moot point. |

Not assumptions either. More like hypotheticals.
I am quite aware of the problems with the West Papua border. That doesn't mean it is impossible to cross legally or illegally and the West Papua border isn't always closed. Anyway, in real terms, crossing a border is a simple as geography and going from 'A' to 'B'. |

My point was (and still is) that it's easier to get on a plane than to come by land and sea (and this has been shown in many books). So it's irrelevant that Indonesia neighbours Aus. You disagree and Vegemite went off on a tangent. I'll leave you to it.

Yes, it's easier to come by aircraft if everything is above board. That doesn't mean it cannot be done by other means if you want to avoid certain authorities.

Just come as a visitor and stay - easy, happens all the time. Or you could hike through the jungle if you prefer.
Hiking through the jungle is a bit more adventurous. I'd prefer to sail across in a yacht. |

Hardly a tangent. The whole discussion was initiated because THR mentioned that Indonesia is Australia's northern neighbour. I think its very relevant to point out Sydney to Jakarta is not an accurate assessment of the physical proximity of the landmasses of the two countries and that other parts of Australia are geographically much closer to Indonesia. That's a physical fact and has nothing to do where the majority of the population of each country lives or how difficult or easy it is to travel across the border from PNG to West Papua Indonesia is the main jump off points for the people smugglers. Why? cos its physically close to Australia? Oops no, silly me, Sydney is long way from Jakarta so it cant be that. Must be some other reason that the smugglers use Indonesia as the start point for the dash to Australia. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to what it might be? |

And then telling me that Perth and Darwin are (still) a long way from Jakarta didn't exactly counter my point. Although Aus and Indonesia are neighbours the distance is still large compared to other neighbouring countries. Yes silly me for suggesting that it's not that easy to get from Indonesia to Aus on the surface. It must be like a day trip for those pesky boat people. The original question was why there are not many Indonesians in Australia. I was just pointing out that the distances involved are much larger than those found between other neighbouring countries and does not exactly facilitate easy migration. The question in no way mentioned illegals or boat people but here you are telling me that it's a short hop for them. Instead of asking me what I meant you went somewhere else. Sounds like a tangent to me. Indonesia is one of the closest countries to Aus but it is not really close. And the bit that is closest (West Papua) is not the bit where many people live. It's also not where the Muslims live and it's not where the boat people start from. Here's another similar example. How close are the US and Russia? 3 miles. Why don't you get more people travelling between the US and Russia if it is only 3 miles apart. |

West Papua on the other hand, closest point to point is 150nm. |

Not so. The closest country to Australia is Papua New Guinea and from the most northerly point in Australia to the most Southerly point of PNG, it is less than 100nm. Easily done by boat or light aircraft. Port Moresby is only 295nm.
West Papua on the other hand, closest point to point is 150nm. I wrote "one of the closest" because it is not the closest. ;) PNG is not part of Indonesia. |
