If you take a look at the map:
- most of Queensland is tropical. Relatively few countries/states/territories in the tropics observe daylight savings
- most of Queensland is to the west of Brisbane and gets the sun later in any case.
But you say you're in Cairns so you should know that anyway

Arguments about there being more or less daylight, curtains fading etc are nonsense but the basic point remains that Queensland is a huge state and there's no particular reason why the same timezone should prevail over an enormous land area.

Especially when a huge proportion of the population lives in this area (East coast). And need to communicate on everyday running of business.
Ok, it's an inconvenience for those living near the boarder who live in one state and work in another.
But the bigger picture is business districts are trading at different times. When the local market is so limited and needs to work together, unlike in your Europe. Which is not so vulnerable to changes like time zones.
Why through another obstacle in the way?
