Ooh er - and there was me thinking I might be being overly paranoid
Seriously though, cheers for all the info - plenty to think about and at least I will come prepared - the bee suit is gonna be my first port of call I think!!
About the ants - I did notice loads around the pool area of our apartment in Mooloolaba. God they were a bit vicious !
Love this site which has been a great help already and look forward to sharing my (long) application process with others in the same boat!

I also burn those coils, they seem to do the job better than any other thing I have tried.

I have never had a problem with mozzies, I am sure I get bitten but never feel it and certainly have no reaction whatsoever. I am only aware of being bitten once when a friend flicked one off my arm.
Unfortunately my poor wife would suffer from 30 or 40 bite marks (big red lumps) if sitting outside and spend days itching from them.
IMO the ants are the worst, they get everywhere and have a tendency to inject very painful formic acid.
I think I have seen about 2 redbacks in 6 years (though I know they are everywhere). I have seen only two live snakes (pythons) and they arent the scary once you have your first encounter.
My wife, like many poms, was very frightened about all the bugs etc. She still prefers me to move the big spiders outside and to kill the cockroaches but she isn't bothered about insects very much anymore. You get over it very quickly.

Coincidence or what?
Just found a White tailed spider on the back porch....it had been there a day or two and we had ignored it.
This thread prompted me to take a closer look

Dont worry about the bugs. One of the things I love about brisbane (I live in the CBD) is that even in the urban environment you will see lizards etc. It's cool, and certainly reminds you you are not in the UK!
We were at the rugby league world cup final the other week and the security guards found it hilarious that we were jumping out our seats when big moths were hitting us etc.
I've never had a spider in my flat or a beetle. You wont see them often.

It's a sub-tropical climate - creepy crawlies are just a fact of life. You can expect to see lots of bugs but the only ones we regularly see in the house are cockroaches and ants (which I obviously exterminate and remove asap).
More problematic are the mozzies - which, quite frankly are doing my head in!!! We have invested in 2 x yard guards to try and combat the problem. I am thinking that the beekeeper suit is looking like a very good option at the moment.
Seriously though, I quite calmly swatted a HUGE cockroach from the top of my DD's buggy when out and about last Friday night - proof that you do get used to the bugs and get on with things (I was TERRIFIED of cockies when we first arrived 6 months ago).

Were in Springfield, the mozzies can be a real pain in the ass at dusk!, and its getting dark here at 6.15pm!!!, but other than that the wildlife is amazing!......Seen no snakes yet, but some pretty intimidating spiders, on the plus side the lizards, water dragons and skinks are great, even had a preying mantis type thing on the eve of our house at the weekend!, and the birds are lovely too. Im sure they are all around us but we are quite open and grassy and its all new where we are, but even though we had pretty much the same thoughts before we arrived, we just live with it all now and love it all.......its true that the ants are a pain too though!
