I'm in that game but I live in WA.Be aware of the issues in the industry. Some companies bring in labour at the minimum rate ,which would probably be around what you have been offered. The minimum rate complies with the requirements of a 457 visa.
The normal rate in Perth would be around $29-$30 per hour for standard structural work. For 38 hrs this gives approx $1100 per week on the $29 rate .$57K per annum as a round number.
Normal o/time would be 1 or 2 hrs per night for the week and 4 to 6 hrs on sat morning.First 2 hrs on weekdays are at 150% and first two hrs on sat @ 150% and the rest @ 200%.A normal Perth wage would be $70-$80K per year.
Some companies in WA advertise o/seas,they are not the type of company you would want to work for,I would think Vic has the same type of companies. They will prey on your lack of local knowledge and 457 status.Having said that some companies also treat 457 workers as if they are local,Vic would no doubt have those also.
I would think a company offering minimum wage would probably be one to avoid. The worst I have seen was a company paying local labour normal rates, and paying Korean welders $10 per hour less with no O/T penalties, flat rate for all hours.
Your best option may be to apply to emigrate from the UK rather than 457 status.
The bad news is I am expecting a downturn in the industry as projects are called off,but WA is a boom/bust state.
Good Luck
