Re: Cost of living
When I look for work for example it is on my own back and I certainly don't show on any unemployment figures.

Re: Cost of living
Unemployment supposed to be low in QLD. Still took me 3 months of serious looking as a skilled IT worker to find work.
On the whole, I earn a bit more in QLD (hubby teacher earns about the same) than the UK. COL means that we seem to have a lot less disposable income - but we buy what we can (clothes!) from the UK, and go to markets here for food. Going on holiday is astronomical here - but with Aus holiday allowances you won't have time to do that very often

Re: Cost of living
The problem is that eveyone knows the unemployment figures are grossly under quoted, it was mentioned on the news the other day that along with the official rate likely to be heading up the number of hours worked is going down as overtime and normal hours are being cut.

And is the holiday time even different between the countries? Wiki says
5.6 weeks (28 work days), including 8 public holidays in UK,
4 weeks standard, plus 10 public holidays. 5 weeks for shift-workers (those regularly rostered across a 7 day week in Aus.

Re: Cost of living
Well if getting up at 6 every day and scouring the building sites for work & then applying for between 10 - 20 jobs in the papers every time it comes out isn't looking hard enough... We have to rely on public transport at the moment so it's not always easy to apply for jobs that bit further away. My husband was getting up at 5 to catch a bus, travel 1hr, do an 8hr day & then catching a bus home, job came to an end & no new work available. We seem to be lacking every licence they require & getting the licences takes time & money. Catch 22

Re: Cost of living
Im not sure exactly where you get your figures? Our region is 9%. It seems clear that you will believe what makes you feel better about a future move perhaps? The reality from people actually living here seems very different. :-)
yeah they are underquoted - in every country! A similar methodology is used everywhere so when you look at brisbane unemployment 4.5% and London at 10% then London does have more than double the unemployment, even if the a actual number of unemployed is bigger.

You need to read the stats through rose tinted glasses to get an accurate picture

http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publicatio...cm%3A77-226955 http://www.deewr.gov.au/lmip/default...R/QLD/Brisbane
London
Employment Rate (16-64) : 67,4
Unemployment Rate (16+) : 10.2%
Economic activity rate (%):65,9
Brisbane
Employment Rate (15-64) : 74.9 %
Unemployment Rate (15+) : 4.7 %
Participation Rate (15+) : 68.5 %
So tell me, what is lying? The statistics, or a small sample of people's anecdotal evidence.

A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station..
