Just to clear the air.....i dont want to sneak one through customs, i want to know what tax would be payable to see if its worth buying one in Singapore or better to wait till ive entered Australia or buying one in the U.K. and which model is seen as a good purchase.

If you want to compare a price of an aussie one you can look at Dell they have UK prices and Aus prices on their websites .co.uk or .com.au respectively.

You might want to think about warranty - laptops are pretty things, but v.expensive if things go wrong. This is one time an extended warranty is worth having (like dell's). Ive had laptops from since forever and they all need some repair or other after about a year (those were all IBM thinkpads) and thinking about it they may have had a rough time because they cost me nothing and were used all the time.

I think the tax is 10% GST (like VAT).

If it were me I'd chuck the box and wrapping , whack it in a laptop bag and claim ignorance if challenged.

What sort of support do you expect to need if it goes wrong? Do you think you'll get a warranty which will operate in Oz? The official importers in most countries generally don't like these "grey" imports. My guess is you'd have to pay for a local computer store to look at it if it went wrong.

Some of the good ones like Dell will let you transfer warranty around the world.
