Cool Re: Calling all Nurses

Hi, We're off south of Brisbane area, the wife is a theatre nurse, we do not have any jobs lined up, hope to settle first.
Hoping to go out in October to ease into summer, give the kids time to chill and adjust before the new school year starts late January 2004.

Been in Sydney since November 2002, was offered a job following a telephone interview before we came out, so packed the kids off to school and started work in A&E two weeks after arriving. Same patients but different roles, not a progressive as UK but they are working on it.

Mums been working here as a Community Nurse for 20 years, its a cross between the UK District Nursing and Health Visitor Role, but future proposals are separation of roles between specialities, such as child health/ aged care etc.

Thanks Sue and Ian,

This info is great to know about Community nursing in Australia as I did not think it was anywhere near the UK standard, how can it be it is still developing in Australia, with different people organising the service (area health and charitable organisations) I wonder if the nurses still require degrees to be nurse unit manager on the community as they do to be Sister in the UK if your mam knows about this could you ask her how the nurses progress up the career ladder on the community, I would be grateful .

Hi Sue,

Very interested in this as well - I'd like to see your info as well if possible. Are you able to either forward the pm or add it to this thread?

Thanks

Sarah

Default Nurse in NSW

Helloooo.
My husband is a community psychiatric nurse, and was originally told by all the agencies and some of the health managers that he would not get a community job straight away as he doesn't know the area!!!

In short what a load of rubbish.

He has just sucessfully interviewed for an assertive outreach post North of Sydney for exactly the same job he was doing in the uk!

We did all this once in the country. My advice, if you want and are experienced to get more than a standard RN job apply directly to the health provider, do not go through the agencies.

As for asking why Aussie nurses are leaving, my experience in the UK was that young aus and nz nurses were using their qualification to travel and see the world but fully intended to return to their home country. Just my experience :-)

Hope that helps. Feel free to PM if I can help at all. I am here in NSW so may find info easier to get hold of if I can help anyone else.

Cheers
Esther

By the way I am also an RN mental Health and will be working at Macquarie hospital in Ryde. I found this job within a week of looking!
