Just noticed your thread... we are arriving in Mooloolaba on 30th March to validate our visas. (we have got to return to blighty to complete house sale) We would love to meet for a chat and a drink, it would be great to know people in the area we are hoping to live in. We have 2 kids 13 and 10 who are very excited at the thought of moving to Oz but it would be great for them to meet other kids who have already done it!!
Hope to hear from you before we leave on the 28th...

We would love to meet up soon with any friendly expats or Aussies for a beer, BBQ etc (except a cup of Australian Tea
).
How do you go about this though? as it's quite a daunting thought as at the moment the kids have a better social life than we do - so whats that about!!
Someone please tell us we are not mad for doing this!!

Hi pearl and Wal,
We have just accepted an offer on our house so will hopefully be looking to be there around beginning of June....... We are not sure yet where we will settle, although Buderim area sounds lovely, we have also looked at mountain creek school. We are both in our 30s and have a girl of 11 and a boy of 8.
Hopefully we will meet up with others too when we get there
p.s I don't think you are mad
.... very wise infact
Speak soon

Hi again,
The kids have managed to make quite a few friends early on (much earlier than us!!) because there are so many activities for them to do in a group.
The Schools they attend has after school clubs/sports every evening so between them they do Football, Golf, Hockey, Swimming, Theatre and Book Club. They also have Football out of School.
We've found that they've made friends as there so dam busy
It's never going to be easy as it's such a change but if they want it there's loads organised for them to do. Out two both had tears before we left but now the'y be devastated if we had to return to the UK and we've been here less than 2 months.

I know there are regular expat meets on the Sunshine Coast so you should have your social life back soon
My eldest daughter is nervous about making friends, how have yours got on?

My daughter was 11 when we moved here (now nearly 14). She was very upset leaving all her friends behind and I felt like the worst mother in the world. She made friends quickly and now has a really nice circle of friends. She goes to Mountain Creek High School and loves it - says its much better than the secondary school she went to in the UK.
Good Luck

Whenever we go on holiday she always ends up with a couple of new people she knows so it shouldn't be a problem.
How do other kids take to the English acent?

No problems about the kids having an English accent at all in our experience. I wouldn't even say there's that much of a novelty value to it as our two both have other English kids in their class as well as a South African lad.
We're actually starting to notice an Aussie twang in the kids already - even the way they already pronounce words such as Yogurt and Maroon - oh how we giggle to ourselves.

No idea - it's a strange one isn't it.
Straight out of Kath and Kim if you ask me.
With Maroon or rather Marone being the colour of Queensland perhaps it's called this to personalise it more. Or perhaps maybe they just can't speak properly.
I wonder how they pronouce Maroon 5 when they tour?

Loads of kids come and go from other countries, we have UK, scots, USA, german, singapore, PNG, NZ, and Mexico in our kids circle alone. They do make friends easily.
