I'm still trying to fathom this one ...

I've had the odd recent embarrassing moment when out with Aussie couples and am just wondering if it's 'just the way they do it!'

Ok,

Recently out with friends. We arrive at venue and I buy everyone a drink ... a 'round'!!

I've now not finished my drink, but notice company has just been to the bar and got themselves and partner a drink, but not one for me or Nic ...

Throughout the night it was quite one sided with who was buying 'rounds' and who was buying, basically themselves a drink!!!

The best bit was the coincidence that appeared sooooo many times! ...

'Their' glass would be half full, but after we returned from a ciggy outside, it was full! ...

Am I buying 'rounds' that aren't needed, and if so why am I NOT being told "oh it's ok, I'll get me own in a minute!" ...

As I say this has happened a few times, it wasn't the first!

Incidently, company are lovely people, a good laugh! ... but ... stingy or what! ... ... OR! ... as I say, am I buying 'rounds' that I simply shouldn't be
! ...

No we do not seem to buy rounds we each buy our own, that is what happens with our friends. Sometimes we do buy rounds but we might put money in the middle for the grog. I think the best way of finding out is to set the rules and ask in the beginning. I guess some people have more money to spend and others do not drink so easier to buy own drinks.

We always buy our own wine when dining out and our friends buy theirs as we do not have the same tastes.

Don't buy rounds. It must be a British thing. Like the driving over here, no curtiousy.

Whenever we're out with Aussie mates someone 'may' offer to buy a drink but it's definitely not a 'round'. If you want a drink you get your own. Maybe they weren't taking the mick, just assumed you were being generous but would never assume they were expected to do the same. Thank god. Keeps more money in your pocket.

Although... I was amusing myself in the bookshop t'other day reading a Guide To Australian Business Etiquette, which firmly advised that Aussies will expect you to stand your shout and it's a terrible thing not to.

Of course, the (Australian) author may just have been out to wind up Americans

All I can say is that I've bought a hell of a lot more drinks at my club than I've had myself. Same as at my club in England, come to think about it!

As an aussie, it depends who i am out with. Sometimes we just each get our own drinks, and other times (usually the men!!) will go rounds. I hate it when people buy rounds tho cos i only drink water or diet coke, so i end up paying a fortune for my non alcoholic drinks. But if someone else bought us a round i would by the next one.

I have found exactly the same thing and was equally caught out.

I could not believe it when everyone bought their own. I have been to loads of barbies and most of them take their own eskys and drink their own beer....!!!! The take home their own stuff.

Had to change quickly and not spend a fortue on everyone elses night out.

C'mon Bluekipper when have you ever known a scouser or jock to buy something with their own money (LoL)!!!. Really though, your right no problems with scousers, jocks and of course Geordies (def Mackems though!).
Been out myself with Ausie couple and we both bought rounds and I don't think they felt that their was anything wrong with it.

An informative thread this one, ta. Have to say no matter where you are when you get stung that first round of theirs it's time to readdress the situation. Weird to bring home bottles that haven't been drunk though.
