Is that about it, any other vital info I've missed?
That's basically it. You can find plenty of info in this thread about how people check for availability.

As above...US is merging with American Airlines so miles in this program will soon be used on OneWorld instead of Star Alliance. Availability might be harder to come by.

With Star Alliance the airline which seems to offer the most award seats between Australia and Europe is Thai Airways - is there an equivalent generous airline in Oneworld?

Historically, no. However Malaysian has just joined & is currently showing great availability - hopefully that continues. Qatar Airways is joining too.

Singapore Airlines should be quite good as long as by Europe you mean Heathrow.

Singapore is in Star Alliance, and most of the regulars here will tell you that getting award flights on Singapore is like panning for gold in the Murray River - the chances of getting one are slim to anorexic.

Ok, because I'm an idiot and don't travel all that often, can someone answer a couple of stupid questions for me?

I want to go to Europe in July and have found a great rate on Expedia with Finnair. Can I book my flights myself via Expedia and use my USAir miles to upgrade to business or do I have to book business with USAir via their website?

Finnair is currently in OneWorld and US in Star...that will still be true in July - therefore no upgrade. Besides, only very expensive economy fare classes are upgradeable with miles anyway.

If you have US miles you'd have to book.business on Star Alliance carriers with them over the phone...not the website.
