Thank you all so much for your opinions and answers. For the info requested, we are a childless married couple, late 38/41. Looking to live centrally to start with I think... ideally without the need for a car. We're not really interested in nightclubs etc but would be nice to eat out occasionally. We'd be looking to rent a 2 bed apartment to start with I think.... just till we settle in. We're not really beach addicts so occasional weekend trips out to the coast would suffice I think.
Hope that helps .. thanks again

I live in the centre of Brisbane and don't have or need a car. (We rent one for when we want to escape Brisbane for the weekend)
There's certainly no need for a car in the centre of Brisbane. The ferry system and catamarans are great (the best bit of living here) and when needs be there are cheap taxis (only cheap thing here)

I imagine we'd get a car eventually but just didnt see it as a priority at first...

I would liken Brisbane to a "nice" American city. The car rules and there are lots of idiot drivers. There's very little greenery in the city - high rise everywhere. It's quite red-necked, customer service is crap, weather is horrid in the summer - extreme heat and humidity. It's a boring, boring, big town with a small country town mentality. I too think the international departure airport is the best part.
What a complete load of crap....how often have you walked around the city ?? not much greenery, open your eyes.
Weather is horrid, well hello Brisbane is in the sub-tropics,,why don't ya bugger off down south if its that bad....

We had no car for our first 18 months here and managed fine. The Summer heat though, we now find much easier with a car. Carrying shopping from the bus stops in scorching heat was hard. We often got taxis then but you would need to pick your times with that and not have anything that needed the fridge/freezer quickly as the waits were often long. Mind you Woolies are starting home deliveries now so that solves that, if you use Woolies.
The rest of the time though, we loved it. We both walked to work. The bus was a 2 minute walk. The City Cat a 15 minute walk and the train a 5 minute walk. If you have access to all these, your life will be much easier I think.
We lived in 2 bed apartments in Auchenflower but in these sorts of areas the contracts were often only 6 months and the rent was increased at every renewal. One place, they increased by $100 p/wk!
Taxis though, we had so many horrible experiences. The majority of them were so sullen and miserable, some were shocking drivers, few knew where to go and so the prices could be silly if you didn't know your stuff. That time has put is off taxis here big time.
Good luck with it all.
