I used to have great fun popping the dead ones that washed up, they look a bit like blown up condoms
I dont think its a pastime I will pass on to the lad though

I'll tell you what though, its not just Australia that has nasties about in the sea - down here on the English Riviera (hayling island) we get all sorts.
I spend a lot of time kitesurfing and over this summer at least 10 of the guys I know were stung by weaver fish which can be pretty nasty. One guy was stung by what we can only assume was a jelly fish tentacle - he thinks it was flicked up onto his arm by his board and the scars are really nasty - it look like a series of stitches.
They may be more nasties there. but at least its warm.

When living in South Africa (another venue for blue bottles) there was a indigenous plant with thick leaves that grew next to most beach areas. By breaking off the "leaves" the juice from the plant was almost a magical cure/pain relief.
I wonder if any Aus locals might know of an equivalent over there- nature always knows best

) My son got a nasty jellyfish sting in France this summer before we came over here (not quite as dangerous as the bluebottle but still scary). I had made him keep his T-Shirt on to help avoid the sun and it got caught up inside the top stinging him several times. It was only a tiny thing but there were loads of them on the beach almost like bits of jellyfish rather than whole ones. I have bought him the proper surf tops now as they are close fitting and should avoid it happening again.
Hope that their experiences with the blue bottle and the ray haven't made them nervous but if they are anything like my lot they soon forget, it is just me that gets worried
