Having a nice walk along the beach and my daughter was stung by a Blue Bottle...she's ok but the sting was quite painful
She was walking a bit behind us and was about knee high in the sea when she felt a sting, she flicked it off her leg... unfortunately it went onto the other bloody leg where it then stung her again.
She's fine now...thank god!! Keep your eye out for them as they are around in the summer months, they are quite small around 2cm's, 'Blue' jelly fish type things. Your meant to get the Blue bottle off as soon as poss 'preferably with tweezers or a glove on', put something cold/ice pack on it.... Don't put vinegar on it or rub it with your hand or towel. They can also sting you when they are dead on the beach
the stings can be quite dangerous so please be careful.

must say I thought that this should have been treated with vinegar, but after reading up with these things that would have just caused more pain
after today we'll be going to the beach a little more prepared!Cheers for good wishes everyone

Cheers...the kids had been swimming in the patrolled area, it was the walk back to the car when it happened, must admit probably would have been far quicker to have jumped in the car and gone back down to them, rather than coming back home

My son stood on and got stabbed by a stingray in our first week here. Quite unsual on the Sydney coast apparently. Lucky the doc knew what it was as he had just been stabbed in Queensland. Teatment is hot as you can bear water. Just in case.

Glad the they are both OK I find it difficult to relax at the beach with the different nasties out there (silly I know
) My son got a nasty jellyfish sting in France this summer before we came over here (not quite as dangerous as the bluebottle but still scary). I had made him keep his T-Shirt on to help avoid the sun and it got caught up inside the top stinging him several times. It was only a tiny thing but there were loads of them on the beach almost like bits of jellyfish rather than whole ones. I have bought him the proper surf tops now as they are close fitting and should avoid it happening again.
Hope that their experiences with the blue bottle and the ray haven't made them nervous but if they are anything like my lot they soon forget, it is just me that gets worried

Glad she is OK sue. Dan used to get stung constantly while surfing at Maroubra beach in Sydney, but never had any ill affects, just a bit sore.
I used to have great fun popping the dead ones that washed up, they look a bit like blown up condoms
I dont think its a pastime I will pass on to the lad though
