Re: Better The Devil You Know
My advice would be – make your application ASAP. Rules can change,
apply now whilst they are in your favour.
Remember, even though your application may be fast-tracked, you have
about 5 whole years to actually commit yourself to the move once you
get your visa(reading from this group it starts from the date you get
your medicals done).
Therefore, making the application is not a commitment – it is simply
paying £700+ quid for the choice to move and live in Australia in the
next 5 years. If you can afford the cash – do it or you may regret it.
Think of it as an insurance premium.

Visa expiry is 5 years from date of visa grant.
First entry date is *normally* 12 months from the (earliest) date of
medicals and police checks.

700+ is a bit of an understatement. More like a couple of grand.
You're suggesting you have five years to make up your mind, based on
the date of your medical.
Not so, don't forget you have to validate your visa by travelling to
Oz, usually within 12 months of your medicals or police check dates.
That's a lot of time, trouble, and money just to give yourself the
option. Changing your mind by deciding not to emigrate after you have
been granted the visa is a different thing. If you feel it's not the
right thing to do, then don't it.

Re: Better The Devil You Know
Thanks for all the replies.
Hope you enjoyed your holiday Selina & thanks for putting things straight Yvonne.
For the last 18 months I have waited, impatiently, on the postman waiting on ANY news from AHC, London.
'No mail today Michael, maybe tomorrow',
'What the f***'s keeping them?'
But now we've got the go-ahead its a different story.
Its 'OMG - are we doing the right thing'
Family/friends. Know nobody in Oz.
14 year old daughter is adamant she's NOT going.
(maybe she'll change her mind when we validate)
Youngest of 3 daughters, closest to my parents ie. i'll be the one to take one of them in when the other dies.
My mum has M.S.(confined to a wheelchair) - and has said that once we go she will never see us again unless we come home!!
She would not manage/survive the flight.
I always remember that she said she didn't migrate to Canada because of HER mum (my gran)!!!!!
Sooooooooooo confused,
Regards, Shona xxx

I had no idea how much money you good people had been taken for, good job the Aussies do not get ripped off for the same amount when going to UK they could not afford it.

Re: Better The Devil You Know
I would go for it. When we decided we would emigrate (6yrs after looking
into it), we no longer qualified - I had lost points for age & my skills
weren't applicable anymore. I had to spend 3yrs re-training (total loss of
salary for 3yrs), 1yrs work experience at the same salary I was on 10yrs
previous, all before being able to get my skills assessed & another year
waiting for the visa process to go through - a lot more expensive than the
cost of a holiday to validate your visas.
If you don't, you may regret it.
