Better The Devil You Know

Hi ya folks,
me again and its 2.30am nearly.
Just to let you all know - we're no coming to stay.
We WILL validate somewhere in Oz but......better the devil you know.
At this moment in time - family & friends are more important to me that seeking 'a better life'.
I know for sure that i'll betoo homesick and 'people sick'.
I am rather well oiled and will maybebe feel different in the morning when i wake with a horrendous hangover!!
But, at the moment, a sunnier and bigger place/house is rather unimportant to me compared to wet, windy, cold, miserable Scotland. But, I have my family and friends whom are more important to me overall.

So c'mon all the replies. No doubt there'll be lots contradicting ie. lifes's too short etc.
I'll read them tomorrow!! maybe!
If i manage to get oot ma pit.

Ma minds made up - so what, I've spent a bloody fortune on forms & medicals but when it boils down to it.......
I can't do it, my family & friends are tooooooo important to me, so - good luck to those who can and maybe one day i'll regret it. I doubt it though.

Well good luck, you must feel better now you have made the decision. Life is
too short and you don't want to haul your family to the other side of the
world if you are happy where you are !! I wish you all the best for the
future.

Best of luck to you. Make sure you make the most of those family and friends. We have been agonising over the decision whether to return to the UK at the end of my contract here for a year now. I just can not get past the cold logic of my closest friend when he said ' "If my friends and family lived in Sydney, I would live in Sydney. If my friends and family lived in Perth, I would live in Perth. But they dont, they live in Bristol, so I live in Bristol. End of story."

Right then :) I dislike Australia, BUT I would never tell anyone to not come here, for one reason I think that you may live to regret it. Do you want to say in the future "I wonder, and if only"??
I have friends back home, including my family who have never tried anything, and have lots of regrets "if only I'd done this".

It is not the end of the world if you decide you don't like Australia, you can just treat it as a life experience. You can always go back to Britain if you don't like it here, just don't burn your bridges that's all, rent out your house in Britain. Or if you're unsure take a long holiday out to Australia first.

Maybe you will love Australia, but you'll never know if you don't try it will you?

I miss family, of course you'll miss them, but there is such a thing as a phone, internet, and holidays.

I can remember when I first left Britain to go to Singapore, I was in tears! But I'm glad I did it, you stop feeling homesick after a while, because there is so much to see in the world. Of course I still miss them, and Christmas is probably the worst... but if you want to do something, you can't let people hold you back

Funny coming from a person who dislikes Australia eh? :), but unlike me , you may love it... you'll never know if you don't try, and it's not permanent is it.

Anyway, best of luck to you what ever your decision is.

cheers:)

At lest you are going to validate your Visa , reguardless of my opinions of Perth it could suit you .
But I do think friends and family count for more than some think on this forum , and only cut your ties if you need to get away from them.
Most need people contact more than material things , its possible to be out of it in the biggest crowd.
If you move or not Best of Luck , hope to see my outlaws in the Kingdom of Fife soon God help me.:D

well said pb.
dont worry shona, try to validate them visas. like you say you have spent a lot of money getting this far so a little more on a decent holiday to oz would be well worth it and buys you a lot more time.
and who knows like ceri said the holiday may be the big decision maker one way or tother.
good luck and hope to see ya out soon for that holiday

Dearest Shona

I would never leave the UK without my mum and my sister. I think that nothing can replace that closeness.

You can always change your mind about Oz. Come out and validate (the rooms still there for you- if we ever get there) and then see how things pan out.

You can still have a great life in the UK- just try and ignore the weather! At least you are in bonny Scotland which is the best part of the UK as far as i am concerned.

Love

Nicky

Hi there Shona,

Life is too short to be miserable on the otherside of the world with no family or friends. You can stay here and be the same but as you have said at least they are all with you. I admire you for making your decision. It can't have been easy. And think if you went over there you wouldn't have the pleasure of having four seasons in one day (as we've had here on the east coast!)

Take care and keep writing.

Re: Better The Devil You Know

Hi Shona,

Well I bet your glad that you have finally made a decision about it.....as others have said it must have been difficult after all the money that you have spent. I know what you mean when you said last night about the kids moaning about not wanting to go...I hear it too all the time, especially from my oldest. He has a girlfirend and i keep hoping that it wont last just incase he decides he wants to stay with her (selfish of me i know)
I just know that in my heart I want to go and live in Australia because of the experience for me..and my family...but then again they may hate me for it...who knows?? If we hate it we'll come back. I'm under no illusion that it will be easy because i know it wont....but thats me!!
Its cool that you have told everyone too on here because you could have quite easily just drfited off into oblivion and not contributed again to this forum and nobody would have been the wiser.

Any how, good luck and keep the emails coming...they brighten my evenings up!!!!!

;) ;)

OH MY GOD SHONA! i've been on holiday for two weeks in kos and just logged onto the forum and seen your post. this is a sudden turn around isn't it or i have i missed something since i've been away? i know your were probably a bit pissed when you wrote it but you seem like you really mean it. ok you will miss your family and friends but i think you need to think about the reason why you wanted to go in the first place. i'm not saying that you should go as i too am undecided that's why i'm holding off my apllication because as you know i am a nurse and nurses are being fast tracked. i still have lots of things to look into eg. work, schools, best place to live etc. which i am sure you have already done. why don't you just go to oz for a holiday and weigh up the pros and cons afterwards. you have come to far just to completely give up on the idea. i know that family and friends are important and it's not like you can just pop to england and back from oz as you could if you were going somewhere closer. this is something i must admit i do worry about myself. however, as they say don't knock it until you have tried it and of course if it does not work you can always come
back. i know its a big step and alot of hastle but i would hate to think that 10 years down the line you regreted the decision not to go. think about it very carefully before you give up on the idea keep us posted. selina xxx. :)
