So basically Sydney? Isn't Sydney expensive?

Yes.

Best place = Any where other than Sydney (except Melbourne).
Worst place = Sydney.

You can take English out of England but not England out of the English, typical.

No one's been rude or unfriendly. It's called having a joke. As I said before, it's an impossible question to answer as such some people have decided to be humorous.

Fair enough, but I was after opinions not jokes, as some have said avoid Sydney etc etc.

Unfortunately with any public forum it's impossible to legislate on what replies you get from a query.

Here is a population density map:

http://www.stratfor.com/files/mmf/a/...b98fd89742.jpg

If you don't like / need / want people, you are in luck; Australia has places where you won't find any. Check the map. On the other hand you are still in luck; Australia has a few cities with more people than you could meet in a lifetime. That's why Australia is called "the Lucky Country" - something for all tastes, you see?

However, if you are indifferent to people you might be a climate fuss-pot. Well, you're still in luck, 'cause Australia has the lot. From Pole to equator (well nearly) and from lush wet to dry as a dead dingos donga. Check the map below:
Climate maps

And that's just a little sniff, not even a taste. You can find much more HERE just add words you fancy and there is no telling where you'll end up.

Just one word of warning but: the beer's crook - or at least will make you crook if you try it - so best stick to port or whiskey or brew your own if you really must drink beer.

Classic Will...

My advice is to avoid mediocrity. Simple.

Hi,

as the title says.

Best thing to do is research, research research on the net.

What do you want from an area, are you a city/suburb/town/small town/semi rural etc person. Is there a state that appeals to you? Have a look on www.realestate.com.au for house prices this may affect where you live.

Do you need anything special ie we had 4 dogs to bring over so wanted semi-rural and also there are mostly 2 dog housing in suburbs etc, so this effected our decision, we had to look at acreage properties and then get feedback from various councils as to numbers we can have.

Do you want to live near other UK people? Does your job relate to certain areas, list goes on and on.

We started with 10/20 things that were important to us, then put them in order - then started researching states....... for example I didn't think Nth Qld climate was for us, so we looked at areas SE Qld (Jimboomba/Greenbank/Mount Tamborine) then expanded our search upwards as far as Gympie for acreage places on the realestate site above.

Are you coming over for a reccie, this can be good after you've researched an area then visit it on your reccie along with all other shortlisted, we did a whirlwind visit in 2007 and took in places in WA/Vic/Qld

To be truthful we still didn't know where we wanted to settle, knew where we didn't ie suburbs/cities so we were lucky enough to have planned to see various houses in areas we were interested in and ended up settling in NSW, semi rural and love it. We had the area ticked as a possibility but I had a gut feeling we'd end up SE Qld near on Mount Tamborine, it's probably still my second choice though and who knows when we are older and want to retire near the coast at the moment I'm happy 4 hours inland, houses are cheaper and people very friendly, each to their own - research! :)

Hi SUPERSTARDJ01, I dont generally respond on this site, normally cos much more experienced and knowledgable participants. But I agree - we were all there at one time as a newbie, and it is so daunting knowing where to start!! I live in Perth and love it !!! If you like the outdoors, beautiful Spring, Summer and Autumn but cold wet an windy winter, then you will too. Expensive for a lot of things but not everything, but life, wherever you live is, what you make it, but it is easier in lovely weather, with good friends and great family (if not all of them). Good luck with you research and dont give up the dream. My granny said to me before she passed away, regret the things you did, not the things you didnt do !!!

Re: Best place to live and to avoid in Oz

When we arrived perm., we took 3/4 week driving round looking at the areas/seeing houses that we'd bookmarked in UK on the web - we did tend to like most places, some just weren't right for us but you quickly see this - have your list handy you'll have already choose to visit the places as they meet most of the things on your 'list' - but then you can 'see' the place and mostly we knew if it was right for us or not, some places we stayed overnight to see what it was like etc before moving on............

We had pre-booked rented pet friendly accomadation as and when the dogs were out of quarantine, and kept on looking, then after making our decision on a house waited for it to go through.

You may want to rent first so again use the realestate site for looking at prices of rentals. We never rented properly other than through a nice helpful relocation company but I think you generally have to sign up for 6 months but often people like this as it gives them a base to look around further, when you have narrowed your search down then it may be right choice for you.

Maybe have a folder for each state if you have more than one choice, find out stamp duty/other cost per state, who knows this sort of thing may swing it for you.... We loved WA (was initially looking Bunbury area but inland) but house prices were more expensive there at the time, not sure now. Stuff as much stuff/notes away on areas as you find, then the whole family can read up on areas/look back through clippings, if you find a topic on here that interests you, print it and highlight the bits (I had kilos worth of paper LOL)

We all like something different so it's what suits you. Good luck, you can get swamped with where to go but just tackle it like you would any other project, get map/s off ebay of various states you are interested in, you can use google maps as well to see how far away the 'possible' area is from what's important to you. Have fun!!

I arrived in 1986, and in 2002 I found the area that really suits me

I am afriad it is a pointless question because no one on here knows you from a bar of soap. I dont think people meant to be mean or smartar*e just a fact. Australia suits certain people, other people come here and hate the place, and each area has its pro's, cons and considerations and only you and your partner will know what it right for you.

There is a moving back to the UK forum which is a haven for people who could tell you were to avoid :)

Melbourne or Sydney are the most popular locations (unless you are a copper, lawyer or engineer, then you may end up in WA, but not always) so you might want to start there, go and check em out.

You may as well have asked what should I have for dinner tonight?
