The best future for our kids. Australia or UK?

UK and Europe will probably experience what the Japanese had as "lost decade(s)" of stagnant growth.
Australia, on the other hand, will continue to feed the resources needed by the growing Asia-Pacific for many decades, probably our lifetime. I can say that because these growing economies will take a long time before they reach high standards of living in the first world, and that's what they're targeting.

To the OP, you should know that the actual Aussie flag looks more like this:

Just dabbling in the thread and as the drugs issue is a theme here my 2p
Hydroponic weed vs outdoor grown weed.
I know what i'd rather my kids experimented with - as they will experiment whether i like it or not

here are some interesting comparisons of countries using average data sets for average people

As well when you look at city livability rankings, you can see Australian and Canadian cities in the top 20.
NB again these rankings do not take into account individual preferences about lifestyles and quality of living.

I live in the Sunshine Coast Queensland and don't see any drugs (although I know there are a cross section that take it as I read reports in the paper). I don't lock my car quite often at night, I hardly lock my door in the day time. I feel very safe, I know things can happen but there is a real community here which had been lost at home.

I would swap a Brisbane summer for a British one.
I would consider it a resting, pleasant enough time of year - only marred with occasional weeks of rain in some years. Favourite thing would be long days.
My summer would infact be a Brisbane autumn.
And a Brisbane winter would annoy due to lack of daylight hours.

It is very common and obviously understandable that a prospective immigrant will want to paint a terrible picture of the place they are leaving and a far rosier picture of the place they are going. They will often accept the exact same issues in their new home and pass them off as being 'not too bad really'. I really like Brisbane and wouldn't live anywhere else in Australia but I'm not blind to it's crime, unemployment, high costs etc. We are returning to the UK for many reasons, we are going back with our eyes fully open to it's problems as we realise the problems are here as well.
Wow! This suprises me. As mentioned, I come from a fishing town in the UK and I'm expecting what your friend views as horror stories I see as pretty normal. I'm hoping that's the case anyway.
It's amazing the cross section of views you can read from the same city. I have some friends in Brisbane and they absolutely love it and would never dream of moving back to the UK. Yet I see Police officers wanting to leave the 'horror stories'.
If this thread were to be flipped around ie. Someone in Brisbane wanting to know about my area in the UK then it would pretty much be unanimous and say: not a lot to do and when you do plan something the weather will probably spoil it apart from a couple of weeks in summer, job/career prospects not good and probably going to get worse, terrible gang culture on the streets, energy and fuel prices going through the roof.

Kids will be kids and I know you know. Funny how the battlers like to come out on these threads and like to draw attention to what everyone already knows!
There is a time and a place for everything. I would only worry if my kids had no direction or focus or leadership so that those times and places had no boundaries - and this continued into adulthood.
If duffers, better off drowned...
Fat people: I'm sure there are more in Australia in certain demographics, like for like. Bogans tend to run fat: Chavs run skinny..degree of truth...
Moving to Australia: buyer beware. It's up to the individual migrant to get it right, the devil is in the detail. If life does not improve for someone finding fault then it's a lost cause. There's bound to be some faultfinding with the UK - some trivial, some true especially for those that might benefit the most. In some ways it's a last chance...

If truth be told, I'd rather not deal with either of them. Most people don't want to get pissed on. The good thing about parachuting is that it keeps you dry.. for a short time...
The majority of people do not walk or fish: they want to look at, or be more stationary. At home I much prefer Melbourne to London.

That's can be true at the times of the year when you have excess sun and heat....but when it's around 20c, dry and sunny for a lot of the year it is very easy to deal with
