Could be actually. The new top up plans with inclusive minutes are much better than they used to be. Previously you got nothing at all except credit for the exact amount you recharged. These are much better now with the top up packs.

Jen, how did you manage to get o2 to remove the network lock on your Iphone? Did you just ask them and do you have any special criteria to fulfill to allow this to happen?

Would be grateful for any info as I have an iphone which I cannot live without, however I have jailbroken it to accept other sims but would prefer an official unlock for updating through itunes etc.

Thanks

Can you use a Iphone purely on a data sim card... If so there could be better options.

IE: can you download a Voip Sip softphone and say go with either Vodaphone/Virgin or 3's data plans ?

I've not explore this avenue yet. The main problem I see with this is incoming calls, but what about a forward DiD number that forwards to the account number.... like a pennytel system ?

Hopefully someone has looked at this, I'll be in the market for this kind of System when our current contracts run out in August next year.

3 do 6 gigs of data for 39 bucks per month.... which should be plenty for a Iphone.

I'm with Virgin - $34 for $150 worth of calls & texts and 300mb of data. I download everything while in the house, by connecting to my wifi - so use my 300mb when out and about. As someone else said, you get free virgin to virgin calls, so helps a lot. Hubby as a $69 one which gives him 1gb of data and $520 calls and texts - he normally uses about 10% of his data a month, and he is never off the damn thing!

Iphone doesn't currently allow voip over 3G (unless jail broken) its an apple at&t thing, although this may change in the future..

I've used voip on 3G with a nokia, it is sensitive to the codec used and latency but can be ok...

You don't have an iphone obviously, I am totally addicted to mine & even my usually resistant to anything technical wife wants one.

O2 will unlock if on contract but if payg only after 12 months, had mine for 5 so hoping that they will be lenient & unlock when we fly at Christmas time.

I've only had my PAYG one since March, but never used the PAYG sim and instead put my pay monthly sim in...they unlocked it for me...

We are with Virgin too - moved over from Optus about a year ago and have been very satisfied with the service. I have a $30 plan and add a 1gb $15 data plan on it - never even come close to using the data but the difference between $10 and $15 a month for the extra 700mb is neither here nor there - just in case with my new iphone (which I bought outright due to my SE dying a couple of weeks ago - just put in the old sim) gets over enthusiastic with the data. As much of my communication is with the DH who also moved to Virgin we get free calls and sms to each other and neither of us has had an overspend - we have more than halved the Optus bills we used to get.

I am with Vodafone and for a $49 pre-pay cap I get $350 of calling credit to anyone and anywhere in the world plus $350 calling credit to other Vodafone users.

I prefer this as I can use my mobile to phone the UK without any extra call costs and can still limit my spending. And to all of you that will say use your home phone to call the UK its handy to use my mobile on the way to work and on the way home from work when the times are right and I have time on my hands.

I bought my iPhone 32Gb 3G(S) outright at the Apple store in Sydney - unbelievably cheaper than buying one on contract via any of the Australian telcos. Get a bog standard $80 Telstra plan with iPhone and you end up paying $1800 for it (plus $540 up front) - I paid $1024 and it's completely unlocked and can be used with whichever telco I want to use.

Agree with all the comments about Telstra. As much I'd love to switch they have hands-down the best coverage - particularly out here away from the city. If I lived in suburbia I'd probably go with Voda.
