I hate it if the list just says something like 'towels', I mean be specific! I need to know the name, size, quantity, colour of packaging etc. I don't want to stand there for 10 minutes trying to select the most appropriate!

When I was in Coles last night a brand of mascara was on the list with the colour etc. Coles didn't have that particular one so I phoned home to check. As I wandered down the aisle there was another bloke standing in front of the sanitary section on the mobile talking to his wife...

We were also in the supermarket last week and spotted two teenage boys hovering around the condom section nervously picking up the band aids next to them... being hte good samaritan that he is, he tapped them on the shoulder and loudly announced that he would go pay for them if they liked and what flavour did they want?

Didnt know teenagers could move that quick !!

I just get the regular full fat Pauls milk, I dont drink milk anyway, its mainly for the kids & my kids sure dont need low fat milk (skinny little rakes they are! they dont take after me LOL) & Dagboy uses it in his coffee.

Had to laugh at the phone call story, Ive had quite a few calls from Dagboy when hes been shopping too .

The worst of it is that the Woolies I use it is impossible to get mobile reception unless I go into the far corner of the store near the window.

If I'm trying to select between tampax, I either have to take them with me to where I get mobile reception or try to memorise the different ones.

Sooo.. to keep it going, does anyone know roughly the rules for application of GST to food shopping? My docket has an asterisk next to those items that have GST on them, a sample as follows

With GST:

Without GST:

it's for all non essential food .. like processed food.. ie if you buy a ready meal - GST on a lot of them
if you buy basics .. i.e. essential food..like all veggies, meat etc - no GST

peanuts.. buy raw peanuts .. ie non packed ones.. no GST
salted peanuts etc - GST

cat food - GST
tampax - GST ( as if this is isn't essential !)
all things like choc and sweets GST

soft drinks - GST

100% orange juice - no GST

........................

so long as you don't like to wash your hair, brush your teeth., use cleaning products, don't like light, .eat cakes and sweets etc.. you can live a non GST life when shopping

I tried to find a GST list on the ATO website but couldn't. I did find out that had I pre booked a funeral before 1 Dec 1999 and paid for it before 2005 then I would have avoided GST. Cardboard box for me then...

Since GST is set by politicians and most politicians are men, I think we can safely say that they consider it non-essential

Woolworths assesses all products that it sells to determine whether GST must be included in the price.

there was mass confusion.. even the pollies didn't have a clue on why some things like take fruit juice.. not 100% juice was with GST

So, of the things I recognise, there are 19 that are neither sugared or frozen. Total items 45. 26 potentially sugared or frozen. Of those - it is reasonable to say that one would expect beer brewing sugar to be a bit sugary - otherwise it would be crap, wouldn't it.

then there are the 10 bottles of Pepsi Max which interestingly is also unsugared (though if MrsD puts it in the back of the beer fridge it might end up frozen) so now we are down to 16 items (35%).

Firstly the reason your wife set about my posts was because my posts indicated some food was expensive, a point she became very angry about, I was not the person who started attacking people.

I can see why she cannot understand my perspective on food, obviously we have very different diets but that does not give her the right to call people who eat differently gabblers/stupid etc for posting the prices of what they buy.

As for your nutritional breakdown above you will find many of the products like yogurt/ hamburger buns are laden with sugar and much of the other food has little nutritional value.

Pepsi max contains chemicals that replace sugar and are far worse than sugar anyway. I would doubt anyone would think that was healthy!

Do you really expect yourself or your wife to come on here and attack other peoples posts and they are not supposed to speak up? Isnt that called bullying?

I found a list on the ATO site. I also note that condoms and personal lubricants are GST free - make one for the country.

I can't be bothered tolook through all the items yet but noted that bread is GST free, bread with sweet toppings (though not including a glaze) includes GST and bread topped with cheese is GST free.

I imagine it took hundreds of bureacrats weeks of effort to work out what was ans wasn't GST - able.
