when you do the shopping will you , or do you pick up sanitary items .. like tampax for your Mrs.. My hubby refuses to do this when he goes shopping .. he will not get them for me. I ask him why, and he's says he'll look like a right weirdo buying that, but I have seen other men in queues with them in their trolleys... they don't have a prob with it.

cheers

I do. I do up to half of the shopping, mostly to avoid all of us including kids going out for something so mundane.

I hate it if the list just says something like 'towels', I mean be specific! I need to know the name, size, quantity, colour of packaging etc. I don't want to stand there for 10 minutes trying to select the most appropriate!

When I was in Coles last night a brand of mascara was on the list with the colour etc. Coles didn't have that particular one so I phoned home to check. As I wandered down the aisle there was another bloke standing in front of the sanitary section on the mobile talking to his wife...

podgypossum Jul 20th 2004 1:14 pm

My husband will happily go get them, doesnt even flinch :D

We were also in the supermarket last week and spotted two teenage boys hovering around the condom section nervously picking up the band aids next to them... being hte good samaritan that he is, he tapped them on the shoulder and loudly announced that he would go pay for them if they liked and what flavour did they want? :D :D :D

Didnt know teenagers could move that quick !!

I still find it funny that when I've ran out of detergent and fabric conditioner I go to the shop with "Fluffy OMO" or "Cuddly OMO" on my list
I just get the regular full fat Pauls milk, I dont drink milk anyway, its mainly for the kids & my kids sure dont need low fat milk (skinny little rakes they are! they dont take after me LOL) & Dagboy uses it in his coffee.

Had to laugh at the phone call story, Ive had quite a few calls from Dagboy when hes been shopping too :D .

Ceri Jul 20th 2004 2:19 pm

must be just my hubby then.. mascara lol.. I'd love to see my hubby getting that for me.. I can tell you his reply now.. you must be fing joking.. I'd look like a poofter buying that..lol

Very charming he is too, but buying tampax and make -up .. no, no - he would never get them for me in a million years.

...... can't you remember what it's like being a teen Podgy , that's mean .. I love it!! lol

The worst of it is that the Woolies I use it is impossible to get mobile reception unless I go into the far corner of the store near the window.

If I'm trying to select between tampax, I either have to take them with me to where I get mobile reception or try to memorise the different ones.

Perhaps Ceri's husband has the better idea, just refuse!

MrsDagboy Jul 20th 2004 3:24 pm

Podgy, Dagboy doesnt bat an eyelid either ;) . Ive seen grown men sliding surreptitiously up to the condom section, let alone teenagers :D .

jayr, LOL would love to see you with your arms full trying to discuss it on the phone :D

I see that this thread is 7th overall in number of replies, needs ten more replies to get to 5th place. It's amazing that a question about beans can prompt such aresponse.

Sooo.. to keep it going, does anyone know roughly the rules for application of GST to food shopping? My docket has an asterisk next to those items that have GST on them, a sample as follows

With GST:

Mr Muscle cleaner
Smiths Chips
Milo Bar
Light Bulb (Globe)
Peanuts
Kids Toothpaste

Without GST:

Milk
Mayonnaise
Fruit and Veg
Cajun Seasoning
Rump Steak

Not sure I see a pattern

Ceri Jul 20th 2004 4:59 pm

ooh ooh I know this one ..lol.. but do the pollies? yes it's madness

it's for all non essential food .. like processed food.. ie if you buy a ready meal - GST on a lot of them
if you buy basics .. i.e. essential food..like all veggies, meat etc - no GST

peanuts.. buy raw peanuts .. ie non packed ones.. no GST
salted peanuts etc - GST

cat food - GST
tampax - GST ( as if this is isn't essential !)
all things like choc and sweets GST

soft drinks - GST

100% orange juice - no GST

........................

so long as you don't like to wash your hair, brush your teeth., use cleaning products, don't like light, .eat cakes and sweets etc.. you can live a non GST life when shopping

9 to go

I tried to find a GST list on the ATO website but couldn't. I did find out that had I pre booked a funeral before 1 Dec 1999 and paid for it before 2005 then I would have avoided GST. Cardboard box for me then...

Since GST is set by politicians and most politicians are men, I think we can safely say that they consider it non-essential :D

Customer's GST Guide

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if GST is included in the price when I do my shopping at Woolworths?
Woolworths assesses all products that it sells to determine whether GST must be included in the price.

Basic foods and beverages are free of GST. These include bread and white milk, meat (both fresh and processed), fruit and vegetables, pure fruit juice and breakfast cereals, pasta and rice, tea and coffee, and most ingredients and sauces for cooking.
Many other food and drink products are taxable, such as biscuits, snack-foods and confectionery, frozen dinners and meat pies, soft drinks and flavoured milk, and bakery products such as cakes, pikelets, scones, croissants and finger buns.

There are a small number of non-food items that are GST-free because of their medical properties. Sunscreens with a SPF of 15 or more, incontinence aids, and paracetamol tablets are examples of products in this category.

If a product is taxable, GST is already included in the shelf ticket price displayed with the product. This is the price that appears on your register docket.
Items that have GST included in the price are printed on your docket with an asterisk (*) before the description.

The total GST included in your purchases is shown at the base of your docket "Total includes GST.........."

Woolworths' register dockets are Tax Invoices, as specified by the GST Regulations.

http://www.woolworths.com.au/gst/

too many sites to plough through. I did used to have a booklet. When they first introduced the GST everyone was sent little booklets.

there was mass confusion.. even the pollies didn't have a clue on why some things like take fruit juice.. not 100% juice was with GST

What makes me laugh is is GST on second hand goods..lol, and books

Ceri Jul 20th 2004 5:31 pm

ahh incontinent aids are gst free.. so that's ok then' lol.. perhaps the pollies p themselves a lot and decided to make this gst free

I agree most pollies are men .. and that's why the world in such a mess ( please don't mention maggy)

Mrs D your diet is very very different from our household, my boys would be climbing the walls with 23 sugared or frozen items, I dont think they get that much junk in a year. We have to buy wholemeal, wholegrain, unprocessed as possible, fresh fruit veg and no processed meats. Very different shopping lists, although I still cant see that $125 contains many real meals do you have to buy dinner type food as well?

Forgot the coke thats 33 sugared items.
Notwithsanding the fact that you come across as a sanctimonious git, as well as apparently implying that frozen food should be classed as junk, I am confused by your 33 sugar/frozen count.

toilet roll - unsugared/unfrozen
vanilla yoghurt - unsugared/unfrozen
home brew kit - unsugared/unfrozen
4 cat food - unsugared/unfrozen
2 bacon - unsugared/unfrozen
luncheon meat - unsugared/unfrozen
spuds - unsugared/unfrozen
arnotts chicken shapes - unsugared/unfrozen
plush - unsugared/unfrozen
cheese twists - unsugared/unfrozen
smiths burger rings - unsugared/unfrozen
sakata crackers - unsugared/unfrozen
hamburger rolls - unsugared/unfrozen
bread - unsugared/unfrozen

So, of the things I recognise, there are 19 that are neither sugared or frozen. Total items 45. 26 potentially sugared or frozen. Of those - it is reasonable to say that one would expect beer brewing sugar to be a bit sugary - otherwise it would be crap, wouldn't it.

then there are the 10 bottles of Pepsi Max which interestingly is also unsugared (though if MrsD puts it in the back of the beer fridge it might end up frozen) :) so now we are down to 16 items (35%).

Ah well, can't all be right all the time.

Cheers,

DagBoy

PS. MrsD. thank you :D

Firstly the reason your wife set about my posts was because my posts indicated some food was expensive, a point she became very angry about, I was not the person who started attacking people.

I can see why she cannot understand my perspective on food, obviously we have very different diets but that does not give her the right to call people who eat differently gabblers/stupid etc for posting the prices of what they buy.

Dont overlook who started attacking who here:rolleyes:

As for your nutritional breakdown above you will find many of the products like yogurt/ hamburger buns are laden with sugar and much of the other food has little nutritional value.

Pepsi max contains chemicals that replace sugar and are far worse than sugar anyway. I would doubt anyone would think that was healthy!

Do you really expect yourself or your wife to come on here and attack other peoples posts and they are not supposed to speak up? Isnt that called bullying?

I am sorry if pointing our your diet is sugary/junky has hit a nerve but the point was made only to show why we may pay more for food than perhaps you do.

If you dont want people to stand up for themselves then it might be best not to attack them in the first place.

Besides what was I attaced for for listing my grocery prices exactly the same thing your wife did.

jayr Jul 20th 2004 6:26 pm

I found a list on the ATO site. I also note that condoms and personal lubricants are GST free - make one for the country.

I can't be bothered tolook through all the items yet but noted that bread is GST free, bread with sweet toppings (though not including a glaze) includes GST and bread topped with cheese is GST free.

I imagine it took hundreds of bureacrats weeks of effort to work out what was ans wasn't GST - able.
