A few places may do internet shopping for groceries but its not common like at home. Buying off the net in general lags along way behind.

Woolworths does online shopping in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney... Coles appears to only do it in Melbourne and Sydney...

my mrs works in housing benefit in england and you would be sickened and amazed at what is given to people who have 'just landed'..
part of her work involves the fraud section so i know what i write here is fact and not opinion..
it is the system that is to blame, not people.. anybody trying or just leaving for aus/Nz with teenage children would like to get pr sorted so that aus pays for university education.. there are other threads on here that prove this too..
we all do it...........we would all do it... but when its what 'we ourselves' want, its not abuse, its not bad, sponging, whatever...

as for the racist accusations
there is a touch of racism in every single person.. shock horror!
it really comes down to whether or not we act/confirm/perpetuate these feelings.
in my experience, people who deny it and shout loudest that they are not, are just using the racist word, first' to try and gain some moral highground. Their slightly racist comments are always 'jokes' and understood by the person it’s aimed at! But any similar remarks said by anybody they disagree with are met with a flurry of moral teachings and mutterings.

likewise openly racist people are often factually wrong and give reasoning based on 'feelings' which when questioned, are often shown, and agreed with by the 'racist', to be wrong.... with a few buts...

we all do it.. its just to what degree.. if i ever get to aus then i expect to have some racism.. i think of it as resentment rather than racism.. its normal natural and unpleasant..

i worked on the new ascot racecourse and i reckon it was about 40% poles. they were no better and no worse than anyone else. but it is a fact that they affect things in england. no point in denying it
i happen to like them. they come to make a better life and i think the fit very well into england.

the bad side
i did a health and safety induction course to work at ascot. i was one of two english people in a room of about 25. the 'must have' safety instructions were given in english. when the site safety man left the room, the polish lads looked blankly at each other. then in walked the african security guard who couldnt speak very good english either, and tried to help them fill in their mandatory h&s forms.. then the best of them asked me to help them... which i duly did. i hope someone would help me!

it depends where you stand if poles in england, or english in aus, is a good thing or bad. if you need workers its good. if they are taking your job, its bad

My mum is not english, she has never taken a penny from england that she was not due. She paid tax, had children that all pay tax, grandchildren that now pay tax..

that is england. lots of rules, lots of ways around them..

My missus and are looking to move to Perth around October 2007, just saving hard at the moment to give ourselves a decent start.

Must admit I was annoyed with the program featuring the dentist and his family, I wanted to slap him off the TV - in Luton they shared a 3 bedroom house with 2 other adults, yet in Oz they weren't satisfied with what £400,000 could purchase them.

They should count themselves lucky that they were able to save £400,000 I am sure mummy and daddy helped them no end.

I used to live in Perth when I was young, and was shocked at the house prices on offer, however IMO average prices are no better/worse than the uk, in fact you probably get better value plus better weather out there!

Well done to everyone who appeared on the show, been great viewing for myself and the other half the past few weeks!

Haven't seen today's programme, but has anyone noticed that according to Nadia, just about every job shown on the programme (apart from the carpet fitter and the dentist) "could earn up to £20,000.00" in their job in Australia.

We all have prejudices; preconceived opionions or bias or partiality. Some may demonstrate that in a racial manner, a lot do not. I do have some prejudices of course, I hate Homebase and BMW drivers but that don't make me racist. President Bush is a dick but does that make me racist against Americans? Does it mean I stereotype every other American? Of course not, it means I have a negative opinion on Bush.

I'm a white guy who grew up in Brixton in south London while the riots were going on in the 80's. What a great place to learn to be brought up and get street wise and develope common sense. In my class at secondary school were 33 kids from different races; and a lot of laughs along the way. The minority of the class being white, and I don't recall any racism. I can assure you I do not have any prejudice towards any race or nationality.

I welcome different cultures and thats probably why I love embracing the alternative cultures I have so far encountered in my life, it's helped educate me and realise how bloody insignificant I am as a person in the big wide world.

I may have an opinion but I know for a fact I am not a racist.

And can the person whose keyboard is stuck get another one, I can't make head nor toe of your posts, and move away from Bournemouth, some much more awesome and cheaper parts of the country to live in.

I came on here because I've lived in Oz and tried to make constructive suggestions where I feel I can offer the benefit of my experience. I haven't re-invented myself.

I've made the economic and enviromental reasons why the numbers of Far Eastern European immigrants can be detrimental and in an earlier post u used the word "problem." I never raised any cultural objection to the arrival of the Poles yet when you and others are defeated on an argument u resort to calling people "racist."

I wouldn't have started this line of argument but from yr earlier bombastic post to Gracie, I thought you needed taking down a peg or two.
