We were also told that it had to be the first time you had flown to Australia on that visa. So that meant we didn't get the double allowance and no amount of pestering could change their mind either.

Rules I have heard is that:

1) It must be a one way ticket
2) Needs to be the first time you have entered Australia on that visa (Validation trips voids this option)
3) Permanent visa needed.

If you book with singapore make sure 40 kg is also stated on your Singapore>oz ticket as Singapore check in had a problem with us taking 40 kg to Oz. Trip from Manchester>Singapore no worries. But get it clearly in Writing.

No, it has to be a permanent visa.
