Actually right now I am working in the UAE as an IT Manager,
but I can do Systems / Network Administration work also for a start in AUS.

I have a validated PR visa for AUS and thinking about settling there ASAP.

I have read about Admin staff having difficulty securing work.

Although I do wonder if it depends on your profession and where you live.

My husband is worried that he wont get work as a chef - you never know. He has had the odd nasty comment about his nationality.

As a PA and with secretarial skills, I dont know how much I will struggle and I would go back to Vet nursing if I had to.

Suppose we wont know until we get there.

But it is scary and I have been following Frasers story with interest and get quite excited when I hear about other BE people securing employment in Oz. Well done to Rossifumi on his new job

Does anyone know the full process out there for recruitment.

I have had

Telephone interview 1.5 hrs
Video conference interview 2 hrs

References called for being taken up this week

Are they likely to pull out now unless references are really bad and what are the next stages.

I don't want to assume its the same as here and references unless really bad means you're almost there?

It sure does and I am completely crap at looking for work. I have only started although I did bang in one application to the police when I arrived. It is always a catch 22 - did a specialist role in the UK and alegedly they want people to work in intelligence over here but the little homework I have done so far does not sound promising. The job I applied for I could do standing on my head blindfolded but I have been told it is "a very high grade" and I am unlikely to get in at that level bla bla. Would be better to temp in admin for sfa money. To put that in perspective I earned 15 bucks an hour printing t-shirts and stuff like that when I was a backpacker 20 years ago and the hourly rate has risen by 4 bucks since then whilst the cost of livng is way up there.

I registered with an agency on Friday - they were lovely but it took 4 hours to be told if you have not heard from us in a couple of weeks give us a call.

Don't want to sound neg. Everything else is great - love Brisbane - did a fantastic trip up to Frazer Island last week and I have a nice place to live thanks to another forum member taking the time to pm me. The weather is not bad given it is winter and people are on the whole very friendly and helpful.

Just HATE looking for work -----.

It would be interesting to see what professions people are in and how long it took them.

I must update my CV. I plan to resit all my recruitment tests in Excel, Microsoft Word, typing, Audio typing and power point and then at least I have something to take with me, although I reckon they will do their own recruitment tests in Australia.

Tell him not to worry, those that feel threatened will always come up with comments based on nationality, as though this is a reasonable basis to divide F..wits from normal people.

Plenty of Ozzie mates of mine also have great Pommy mates (and "pommy" is always said in terms of endearment in our social circle).

Hubby is Algerian, although always gets mistaken for Italian.

With everything that is going on, he is a tad nervous of how he will be treated. Mind you, he is quite excited at the thought of embracing Aussie life and has no intention of mixing with Algerians at all.

He loved it when he went before, he did the 'blokey things' - fishing, having a few cold ones on the boat. that sort of thing.

We did have one Aussie guy ask him if he had learned to fly a plane yet, but it was said in jest and my husband pissed himself laughing, replying 'only land one'.

Excel to me is a foreign language. I am crap with numbers, but I have basic knowledge on spreadsheets and stuff like that.

My agency are going to allow me to sit all the recruitment tests and print out the results on headed paper.

I am taking two testimonials from two different agencies, plus some references from my clients as well.

I will throw in some veterinary nurse references as well, in case I have to go back to that.

See what happens.
