Just a reminder to you Englanders. The empire is over you do not have a right to come here and demand jobs. you are competing with great people from all over the world from varied countries and races who are well respected here and dont preach down to us in a patronizing manner all the time. I have personally rejected UK tenders worth 100's of millions of pounds because of the sheer arrogance of them. Simple fact - GB is a small island off the coast of Western Europe not a global power. Welcome to the 21st century. By all mean suggest improvements when you get here but if you want to have no local friends just play the whine game evident in this thread. consider yourselves warned. incidentally recent OECD data shows oz citizens on average work longer hours than anyone in Europe aka the basket case.

But seriously-some observations-

While I am not saying that Aussies can't lie or don't love money(they sure do)
The mentality is a tad different.
Most Aussies don't really understand the "Jack the lad" types who get off a plane somewhere and re-invent themselves.
They dont understand the totally mercenary way in which SOME brits(and other migrants) will pursue self-interest in new country.
That is becuase they never felt the need to leave theirs(not because they are better)
The government might understand(and be forced to pay) and therefore make it all watertight-perhaps too watertight.
Australia is a too easy place for someone to pop in claiming to be something somewhere else.

Secondly the english bag Aussie workplace culture and it never occurs to them that some might not like their anal ,pedantic, mean, micro-managing office habits and prefer a looser more relaxed style-it isnt necessarily a bad thing

Australians lecturing on racism? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. Of course Aussies aren't racist, as long as you're white...

Today on talkback radio. (6PR Perth). A chap rang in saying that his daughter was refused entry to Burswood Hotel casino because she didn't have the correct ID which proved her age.

She did have ID - she had a photographic ID issued by the Federal Govt and recognised by the State govt. It was pretty good ID also - ID which allowed her to work with children. The ID recognised her age, that she'd never had any criminal convictions and that she was fit to work with children.

But it wasn't the correct ID for Burswood. They have a list of acceptable ID and her ID wasn't on the list. So they turned her away.

Then a lady called in with a similar experience. But her relation had photo ID which exactly matched the recognised ID on the Burswood list. But they refused to let her in. Why? Because it wasn't WA ID, it was from Sydney. Same ID - just issued in Sydney.

Wasn't on the list . She wasn't getting in.

Pedantic, anal, micro-managed? Yep - that's Australia!

Is it just me or does anybody else see similarities between the above and the regulations surrounding skills recognition?

Don't confuse staying at work with working. BTW, small island we may be, but with a hell of a lot more influence than your remote plot.

I know what you mean, UK firms should just push the Aussie line - say how mediocre they are.
I'd love to say that I've rejected Aussie tenders worth tens of pounds, but if you can't get it out of the ground or off something with legs it doesn't really make it very far now, does it?

As for rules being rules, I agree, but here the rules are sloppily enforced and the people enforcing them show little common sense. They leave themselves so little latitude because there are so many anal rules that when you try to do something a little out of the box they are totally stumped.
