Re: Australian Dollar
The fall in the price of UK banking shares is now the subject of an investigation. In simple terms speculators 'talked down' the shares in a practice known as shorting or short financing:

I'm afraid the party is over big time for the US. This is a home grown US problem which has global implications that will, ultimately, hurt the US economy most. Their reputation for financial market management has been shot to pieces. If I was a US citizen, I would be very upset with my government on this and many other issues. When you compare the international standing of the US at the beginning of the GW Bush presidency and where it is now it's amazing how far they have fallen. From the world's biggest economy to the second biggest (after the Euro zone), from the engine of world growth to its biggest liability, from defender of human rights to official sponsor of torture. The list goes on.
It saddens me to see this as I'm not anti-American. America is a great country that has given much that is good to the world, although the Neo-con movement certainly isn't one of them. We had our own little Neo-con who, thankfully, has been turfed out of office.

A criminal investigation has been launched in the UK regarding the drop in the share price of HBOS - seems that "rogue" traders spread false rumours that this group of banks (its not one bank - the group includes Bank of Scotland and Halifax) was in trouble and made millions in the ensuing panic. HBOS in reality was in no more trouble than any other bank.
Don't underestimate the fear running through Govt. Don't assume the truth will come out via the press. When did it ever come out during the growing bubble? There are FAR too many vested interests in this to not question what you're hearing.
I don't believe traders were responsible for this weeks chaos at all. I think it was a genuine crisis caused purely by the credit crunch and that institution came to within a millimetre of instant death, possibly bringing the whole show down with them. Obviously no Govt would sit back and allow this without a good fight. Since when did you trust your Govt in a time of turmoil like this?? The best option they had after Northern Rock was to somehow conceal any further crisis.
This is a COVER UP
Oh yes, my 100th post, what an achievement, an extra magic one for me tonite!

as always the likes of you and me will never know the truth - but you can't deny that media scaremongering, consumer panic and nervous traders contribute as much to a drop in share prices as any actual reason for a fall :-)

Our most prudent leader, will do anything to maintain the image of economic competence, but we all know he is probably the most incompetent of all of the last leaders over the past 100 years. He fails to delegate, which is very concerning considering his position, his chum Mr "So What", just turns my stomach, he is what i term "disgraceful", an individual promoted way beyond his natural competent level, like many i suppose, included our Mr Prudent!
I am no Tory supporter either, so nowhere to go for me, but anything is better than this current lot, and i have a feeling many in the UK will take this decision, "the anything is better tha Brown" vote will get him kicked out of office, and the Torys know this, me thinks. The Torys just keep chipping away slowly at PM questions, knowing that slowly but surely Mr Prudent's shaking fist is cracking, the white men in the suits will be along soon to take our great leader away! Roll on May 2010.

Do you think it would be worthwhile exchanging our savings into Oz dollars just now?
Weve got 2.5K sterling in the bank, would it be advisable to echange this just now?

well off !!! the closing of schools, hospitals, post offices, the privatisation of everything and anything, extended waiting times for doctors, hospital appointments and the pressure on housing and schools, along with the ever increasing tax on everthing from fuel to jelly babies.
if this is being well off, then i would really hate to see this country if it was in trouble.
you would do well to step into the real world of the working class in the uk.

Re: Australian Dollar
What he means is that the place he calls home's value has tripled in paper terms since 97, because our Mr Prudent has been printing the stuff at 14% per annum. Because wage inflation has been more or less stagnant. So in reality (real value) it has devalued over this time, but don't tell the electorate that?
Just have to borrow aload more to buy a home, but don't tell the kids that?
A typical Labour voter, dark ages and all that, i bet your kids are open minded about politics after listening to you my friend?
I agree the Tory's are a corrupt bunch of toffs, thats why we are now in such a mess when it comes to choice with regards to political parties; do we have any choice, no not really? But read my original post?

No
I mean the money I have in the bank is doing very nicely.
I mean my investments are doing well.
My kids already own their homes.
Yes I vote labour.....because I have been around long enough to see what damage the other lot did......the dark ages were under Thatcher's government when I was paying 15% on my mortgage.
But then you seem to think that it only today that things are difficult.
You have much to learn
